E320 Winshield damage - replacement cost

Hello,

Today, the windshield of my 2005 e320 was damaged on freeway due to a rock hitting it leaving a circular chip about the size of a 25cent coin.

I am hoping that my insurance would cover its replacement cost. How much does winshield generally cost for this car? Is it worth trying to repair it? If my insurance is going to cover the replacement, I would rather have it replaced.

By the way, I would obviously want OEM part with rain sensor. I hope insurance company wouldnt force me get an aftermarket part instead.

My insurance covers windshields under the comprehensive part of the policy and I do not
have to pay any deductible if it is the windshield.
We did one on the ML at the dealer and it was fully paid for by insurance.

I would call your company to make sure but I have a feeling they will let you have the dealer do it.

Personally, if the rest of the windshield is good, I would have the chip repaired if it can be. Most insurance companies will cover repair 100%, otherwise the deductible will apply.

my 07 E350 has the blue tint..
replacement thru safelite is $975.
if I went with the green band (non heat glass), it would be $350

both were with rain sensor... but not OEM..

insurance coverage varies by state.

I have had my windshield repaired but I only had a star the size of a pencil eraser, and I was very satisfied with the modern techniques used. Geico repairs these at no cost but a replacement has a $50 deductible I think. I also recall the installer saying the rain sensor that is with the original gets remounted to the replacement.

Indeed the deductible does vary by state and policy terms of the insurance company.

I do agree that if it can be repaired that is probably the path of least resistance. They
can do amazing things with the repair materials and equipment used. A 25ยข coin size
is on the larger side of what can be repaired, but it is possible to do.

The best thing to do is start the claim process with your insurance and see what the
options are.

Thanks all for the feedback. I called insurance and they are giving me the choice to either have it repaired at no cost or replaced with $250 deductible. They said I could go to any shop for repair or replacement so I would imagine they dont have an issue with OEM part.

They also said that if I tried the repair and was not happy with the outcome, I could always go back to replacement.

At this point, I dont even know if it can be repaired. Other than that, it is really be my choice. My main concern with replacement is that I dont want to lose OEM parts and I dont know what parts will come off during installation and whether their installation will be as good as original/factory installation. I certainly wouldnt want any repaint for example.

My main concern with repair of course is that I dont want to see a star or cracks even after repair; that could certainly affect the resale value of the car if the buyers demanded replaced windshield or lowered the price due to it.

For now, I will go to a repair shop to see if it can be repaired.

So here is an update. I called the dealership. They work with an external contractor to do glass work. The contractor does the work at the dealership and installs genuine mercedes part only. They also said that only the windshield would need to be replaced, not the rain sensor which can be re-used.

The electronics of the rain sensor mounted to the back of the rearview mirror will be reused, but the rain sensor itself comes as part of the new windshield.

Going through the dealer is the only way I will do it now. I had a 98 S500 that I had the windshield was replaced at Safelite through my insurance company and they caused over $1400 in damage to the car in the process. Safelite was good about it and repaired everything they damaged, but still... They didn't even tell me it happened - just handed my keys to me to send me on my way. I could see problems as I approached the car and when I actually got in I almost cried.

Here are some pics of the damage... Keep in mind this car was in prinsine condition despite it's 10 years of age at the time. It had only done 50,000 miles at this point. The idiot techs at Safelite didn't even wipe their dirty handprints off the mirror. Instead, it appears they wiped them all over the headliner. The rearview mirror was broken apart and re-assembled without all the parts - notice the missing homelink buttons. Since they couldn't figure out how to get anything apart, they pried it all with screwdrivers damaging everything.

So... moral to my story is - NO SAFELITE.
