Rear Ashtray door won't close??

Anybody experienced any problems with this in their E320 or E350s?

When you push the ashtray in, it won't click and connect with whatever is there that is supposed to hold it in place. Non-smoker so it's not even used, but it just bothers the hell out of me when I look back there and see it open! Tried velcro, worked for a day or two but after it got hot, it came apart and popped back open

Any friendly advice from fellow MB owners?

That happened to me one time and I kept playing with getting it to close that one time it actually caught and has held ever since. Not sure of how this device works but I was in the same boat as you about 1 year ago. Nobody uses them but like you said it just came open..

Konigstiger: Are you limited or prohibited in what you can publicly post regarding MB problems and cures? It appears that you have a world of knowledge about MBs. So ... why can you not post your responses here? I'm not criticizing ... just asking. We all go to school on one another.

Other than maintenance sheets, I refuse to post copyrighted MB materials - when have I ever refused an accommodation?

I can't think of a time when Konigstiger has not helped anyone that asked and I totally respect
the issue of not posting copyrighted materials.

When I read Heatwave's post, I didn't think he meant any disrespect. I thought he was just curious if there was a specific reason that konigstiger didn't post the actual answer. Although I don't have a similar ashtray issue, I'd have been interested in the potential fix. From konigstiger's answer, we (especially newbies) now better understand some rights/wrongs as well as do's/don'ts when it comes to posting. As a newbie, I read most threads on my vehicle to try and better understand and take care of it. I really appreciate the experts who try to help folks out.

Oh no ... certainly no disrespect or challenges or anything else. Just a simple question: Why? Got a simple answer: copyright respect. Works for me. I just didn't realize or anticipate that that would be the answer.

You live and you learn. Then you die and all that info disappears with you.

Konigstiger- First, thank you for your help. The instructions you emailed me were perfect. Was able to extract the ashtray from the rear door for examination.

Second, found the problem to be the tip of the locking mechanism had broken off so it wasn't latching. I took some (picture hanging) wire and inserted it through the small hole (where it's supposed to latch) and made a loop and pushed it through the hole until it made a tight fit, thus lodging the wire loop keeping the ashtray from opening. Worked great and fit right back in flush with the door panel. Much better than springing the $$$ for a new one....

Thanks again Konigstiger. Much appreciated. Cheers.
