Exclamation what type of Mobil 1 for E320CDI

Hello. I am considering buy a 2005 E320 CDI and am wondering what type of Mobil 1 (weight) would work here. I live in Miami, FL. I usually buy it for my mechanic and have 3 cases of whatever I use for my Lexus. Thanks!

2005 E320 CDI can use the following:

Mobil 1 0w40 (MB229.5)
Mobil 1 5w40 ESP (MB229.51)
Mobil 1 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck (MB228.31 = MB Heavy duty diesel truck rating with DPF and SCR)
Mobil Delvac 1 5w40 ESP (MB228.31 = MB Heavy duty Diesel truck rating with DPF and SCR)
Shell Rotella Synthetic 5w40 (MB228.31)

In Florida, as long as it is 0w40 or 5w40 you should be good to go. DO NOT use ANY oil that is 0w30 or 5w30 in that engine!

Post Certain motor oils allow the maximum range

In 2005, the mercedes maintenance system (MMS) for determining your range requests what oil is used (on the dashboard interface). The maximum range on a US 2005 E320 CDI is with 229.5 or 229.51 oils (12,500 miles??).

Another writer supplied this nice chart to identify all oils worldwide with their ratings,

http://www.whnet.com/4x4/oil.html

Mobil 1 is there several times.

After I wrestled with this question, I went to the dealer and they sold me Mobil 1 ESP-M 5W-40 and said the '-M' was for Mercedes. The prices seemed reasonable for the oil and filter (prettty high at Walmart too).

The 229.51 oils are for later Diesels with the particulate filter and tougher requirements. One key to note is the 'fleece' oil filter. I'm not sure when this becomes important so I bought that from the dealer also. The new one didn't look fleece but I'm not sure it wasn't.

Fleece filters are for gasoline engines.

Fleece filters in Diesels

Per the above web page oil info:

"For gas engines of the M100 series, gas engines of the M200 series and diesel engines of the OM600 series (not models with Euro 4 diesel particle filters), 229.5 engine oils must be used with fleece oil filter designed for use with 229.5 engine oils."

All of the passenger diesel car engines from the A180 CDI to the S400 CDI are designated with the 600 series engine number so I'm still not sure whether or not fleece filters are needed. However, diesel particulate filters came on after 2005 model year.

About this fleece filter
I've been to he dealers and asked them for fleece filter for our 2005 E320 CDI they and told me there is no such thing.
Anyone got a part # or more info; must be a breakdown in communication somewhere
Thanks

The "breakdown" has occurred wherever you read there's a fleece filter for the E320CDI.

There isn't. Dealer is correct.

Here are the part numbers you requested for the filters (see page 14):

As noted in the attached document, a fleece filter is not mandatory for 2004 or older vehicles. It does appear to be a requirement starting in 2005.

Have you seen how the 642 and 648 engine filters look like?

It is pretty odd though that an MB document from 2007 is this inaccurate.
