A Jetta TDI doing 70 mph can only manage 47 mpg, no way an E-series will approach that let alone beat it!

Hmm... My Golf TDI gets 54-55mpg at 70mph, I normally run at 65 mph and get 56-57mpg. The Jetta is more aerodynamic than the Golf. Then again, I am running a 5 spd and I will bet the 47mpg number is from an automatic as that is about all they will do.
If I get an E-series, my goal is to see if I can manage to get it to average 45mpg.

...Jetta using US diesel (we have no Gold TDI here yet). Our emissions laws are more rigid than yours and supposedly you (in Europe, I gather) have higher cetane fuel available, so it is reasonable to expect you to get better mileage.
The CR test is according to a strict protocol and their mileage numbers are reliable.

which has EXACTLY the same emission requirements as you cali guys as well as NY, MA, CT etc....
also I bet on a long enough trip @ 70 MPH, 40 MPG is attainable and this is at 35,000 miles
the gent getting 49mpg has higher mileage (+150k)and on a diesel that means better MPG over time so although it does seem a little odd and not realistic I almost believe that he could have gotten that

It was a one owner car on the east coast of Florida and I'm the second owner. Purchased at auction by outfit just north of Atlanta and I drove it home getting 34.6 mpg for the 600 mile trip. Went thru bumper-to-bumper in Atlanta for 20 minutes and cruise at 75mph thru Georgia going to 82mph at Florida border. Thought that was pretty good. One pit stop for fuel, etc.
Now my thirty mile commute to Tampa (about 50/50 above and below 55mph) gets me as much as 33.7 mpg. I do calculate at fill ups with a calculator on my cell phone and get anywhere from 28 to 31.5 mpg overall. The instant mileage is probably accurate -- and the a/c is constantly on considering where I live.
I have a 05' cdi, last trip to Florida from Long Island back in first week in June my best was 38.1 mpg @ 75mph. I am looking at getting better mpg this trip this weekend back to Florida, I have just installed a v-tech tuning module and the oil has been changed to elf-total ow-30.
I will report back during or after the trip to let you know how it goes.

Was that from the cluster computer or from fill-ups? The computer can be accurate and your figures sound reasonable. But the computer often gets optimistic from a tune-up, report real figures from your trip back (why not both).
The mpg was done from actual fill ups. My first leg was from Long Island and I made it to santee SC. Be aware I take Calculated risks, the low fuel light was on for 50 mi. I took 20.something gals. The onboard calculator was very close, like .5 mpg off.
The 38.1 mpg came on the way back north and I was experimenting with power service, I went by the directions 1oz per 2gal dilution.
I will report my next trip to you all.
