The main purpose is to be a backup power source for the SBC brakes. Pre-facelift W211 with SBC brakes comes with the AUX battery, a face lift W211 without SBC brakes comes with a single battery.

An R230 with SBC brakes comes with a main battery and "a bigger than W211 AUX battery", the starter battery at the engine bay.

Bob, you REALLY should search before asking questions here. Not being blunt, but with all of the information contained within this forum will tell you everything you need when it comes to working on the brakes on the W211 car.

There's a ton of information here, if only a search would bring it out.

Search should bring a lot of info but on servicing SBC brakes I would prefer anyone who does not know that SBC needs to be disabled before brakes are serviced, would ask first before loosing his/her fingers.

Search again brings instructions on how to disable SBC brakes.

And, disabling SBC is not done by disconnecting battery. Doing so will create all kinds of problems.
