Hello everyone. The red battery light came on a month or two ago and i went in to the dealer and they diagnosed my car saying i need to have the secondary battery changed. They want to charge me $330 for the whole job. I was wondering if this is easy to change so i can do it myself? If anyone has a link or knows where i can find one for purchase online that would be a great help. Also any tips on replacing it would help also.
Takes one plastic nut to remove the filter cover and expose the battery, that might have additional 2 screws on the clamps and a holding one.
I didn't have to replace the battery, but heard the car might require some synchronization after. Not sure about that, but i would fabricate small jump cables just in case.
My stealer wanted $300+ to replace the aux battery. I went to Sears to buy the BS14 but was told by the mechanic it was not a good idea because it was NOT SEALED. So gases would escape...right into the cabin air filter. He refered me to the local BatteryPlus store. Their X2-14 by Ascent Battery Supply (for Harleys & Honda mcs)was the exact size cost $95 +. It's advertised on their website for $10 less, but I did not check. Car's cables had an L shape fitting that need to straighten easily w/ pliers. Bolts right in. I installed without disconnecting the main battery, using great care not to arc anything and took 15 minutes.
The Sears Gold BS-14 is a sealed battery. The do sell a cheaper one that I did not look at.
This is a quote from the product description.

Not too sure the Sears battery is a true "AGM" other than their claim that it uses "AGM Technology" which is not the same as a true "AGM". The give away is that you have to fill it with acid, AGM battery's do not have "Free Acid" in them and is completely absorbed by the glass matting material.
The true test of an AGM is to see if it exempt from hazardous shipping restrictions for air shipments, all AGM battery's are exempt from air shipping restrictions and you can ship them with the same limitations as an empty box by air.

Interesting. ON line vendor would not ship me MB part OEM battery due to hazmat restrictions.
I have also seen AGM batteries shipped dry where acid was poured into the battery, then sealed. After 1 hr of sit you could not pour any acid out as it was all adsorbed in the mat. But it might have been AGM type battery. In any case nothing spilled out when attempting to get it to pour our.
Well the Sears mechanic did not want to sell their product for this application because it would vent the gases into the cabin, so I'll go with drivbiwire's logic that if you can fill it, it will leak gases if not liquids. Why else would they turn away business, and refer me to Battery + ?
Well seeing as Sears claims the battery can be mounted in any position I am guessing that
the acid is also absorbed fully or it would have acid moving around in the battery. That
is something that would not work well in Jet Ski or snowmobile with all the bouncing.
As far as the venting issue of fumes I can not comment. I have no problem going to try
the Batteries Plus unit. I am not in need right now, but when the time arises the Batteries
plus nearest to me is managed by a neighbor's son. He has all of the BS-14 AGMs in stock.
The top of the line will be 89.99 at retail in this region. I will get the discount that drops
it to $75.
Based on all the info so far I am now leaning towards the Batteries Plus unit.
A lot of places just hear that your trying to ship any kind of car battery and refuse shipping even if its ok by law it sometimes doesn't make it past the bozo working the shipping counter, especially if they don't do it regularly
If it is really ok to ship the aux AGM battery,, this is probably why mine was cancelled 1 week after I was told it was shipped. I was forced to buy a new one from the dealer at $151 vs on line. That is when I found the aftermarket AGM's that meet the spec.
And you are probably right,, Bozo is probably who cancelled the order after a week in shippment. Wonder how they go it back. UMMM smells like old fish on this one!
I wouldn't worry about the extra money spent, the Benz battery is worth it to me, $50 bucks is a hard hit on the chin but for the correct part with the right terminals and you know it fits and works/chargers properly cant compare with saving a few bones and jimmy rigging a battery to work in there...
Mercedes is not manufacturing batteries.
For my older models one time I called MB roadside assistance that did "free battery exchange" but charged me $190 for 24 months warrantied battery.
For the second car I went to Costco where $85 bought me 100 months battery.
The batteries MB puts in the cars are usually good ones (the one in our ML320 is in service for 12-th year) but their warranties suck.
I took the advice and ordered the x2-14 agm motorcycle battery from batteries plus in NJ and installed the battery yesterday. So far so good. I live in ct and they shipped it with no problems. The lady at the store said it was agm and used in motorcycles. It Cost 110 dollars with shipping. There was no poured in acid al the connects worked fine with limited tinkering. Exact same size as the fiamm battery aldready in there. Only took 15 min to install. I will let you know if the light comes back.
That is good news. The MB OEM battery is now well over $200 at the dealer.
