snow tire or chain/cable on E350 Sport package?

Hi,

I have E350 sport package. The rear tire size is 265/35/R18. I need to install a snow tire or chain/cable.

The snow cable installation seems to be much more convinient than snow tire installation. Furthermore, I am living in Seattle. Usually, it has one or two times snow per winter. So, I do not want to spend >1000 to buy expensive snow tires to use them a few days per year.

Do you think Z6 cable (SCC Super Z6) will fit my car? The space between tire and car seems to be very limited.

If you have any other alternaive option, please advise me..

If you recommend the snow tire, could you tell me what size of tire should be installed?

Thank you.

Usually going minus 1 in size is recommended for snow tires: for you, this would mean 245/45/17. Go to tire site such as tirerack.com, to check winter tires + rims package. Assume around $150 a tire + 100 a rim. That's the best way to do it. Snow tires are not only good in the snow, but the different quality of rubber makes them safer when it gets cold. I know $1,000 or more is a lot for a snow tire set + rims.

Best of luck.

Thanks Odel.

One more quick question.. Only rear tires are enough? or do I need to have all four tires?

Thank you

You have to go 4 tires, especially if you go minus 1 in size. You need traction in the rear for motion, and in the front for direction. On the plus side, you tires will last twice as long, since you would have two sets.

My owners manual contains

Quote:
Some tire sizes do not leave adequate clearance for snow chains. To help
avoid serious damage to your vehicle or tires, use of snow chains is not permissible with the following tire sizes:
265/35 ZR18
How about yours?

Since you are probably asking for "permission," in any event, I'd think Mercedes doesn't see a difference between "chains" and cables." They certainly don't print "chains are bad but cables are good."

CHP require chains only on drive axle and that's what almost 100% drivers do.
Although some put them or rear wheels having FWD
Cables are very good for going over the mountains via freeway pass. Most of the time you are dealing with pounded snow, or just mud.
If you get into deep powder on back road you need real chains.
