I recently leased an '08 E350. The car now has 3500 miles on it and I'm almost positive it's time for a new oil change, but my dad swears that the maintenance manual says the first oil change is at 13,000 miles. I think he's crazy, I just need some answers to verify this.
You can safely drive 13 000 miles. In Europe MB allows up to about 19 000 miles per oil change. I had my first oil change on the W221 at 33 000 km.
I would have expected the opposite, the "old school" view from your dad but he seems to be better aware of modern oil performance at modern engines.
This is correct. Do not change early run until the FSS determines it is time to change. You aren't driving your fathers Oldsmobile. This really is new High Tech with lubricants and hardware. So feel safe and drive it.

Thanks.
DO NOT change the oil!
Your engine already had a dyno run and computer controlled break in at the factory. The oil after the dyno run was drained and replaced then filled with a specific oil formulated to promote and facilitate ideal conditions during the first oil change interval.
FSS measures actual wear particles in the oil, if the oil is getting to the point that it needs changing the conservative programming will trigger an oil change. FSS in the US is programmed to indicate an oil change at a little over 1/2 actual MB lubricant ratings.
If your are bored, try washing and waxing the car it's better for the car in the long run verses changing perfectly good oil for no justifiable reason.

DB
but then he LEASES the car. I don't think he cares so much about long term effect from waxing his car. I hand washed my car (leased) the other day and all my friends (They all lease cars) called me crazy. And as far as maintenance is concerned, just do whatever the computer tells you to do. Nothing more, nothing less.
Why would leasing make you not take care of a car? Are these the people running around with black dust all over their wheels? Just because you lease doesn't mean you intend to turn the car in at the end. I don't. Leasing and buying are nearly identical from an out of pocket cost perspective if you keep the car. The main advantage with leasing, IMO, is it gives you the lease term to figure out if you really like the car.
Who says anything about not taking care of my car? My car is always super clean. I machine wash the car instead of hand washing. That's all. Yes, I don't wax it, but you gonna give ppl problems for not waxing their cars? I still get all the maintenance work done required by MB.
That's F'd up. Wax that poor Car. Besides it providing a more joyous experience for YOU (no simple Car Wash will ever beat the look and feeling of a freshly waxed ride), you'll help out the poor sap that buys the Car used after you. Very simple thing that goes a long way. Besides you only gotta to do it like every 4 months or so if you want to stay "on top of it", so you could even use that as simply a benchmark amount.
I bought a Lease return, fortunately for me, the ex owner of mine seemed to take impeccable care of it.
