Plan on leasing an '09- I drive 10-12,000 miles per year and will probably purchase the car outright at the end of the lease
The miles I drive, mostly light city/rural, don't really justify a diesel but am tempted by the potential resale value after 5-6 years- I think it would easily justify the extra $3k upfront cost and expect to save this in fuel costs alone during the life of the lease- premium unleaded is about $1.40 per litre, diesel about $1.30 [Canadian]
Concerns about diesel are perceived higher maintenance costs, limited availability of fuel and the smell of both the exhaust and fuel- I have had a 300DT and VeeDub diesel Rabbit in the past- the car will be stored in a garage attached to my house so the smell is really a concern

I don't know about the comparative maintenance costs or the availabilty of diesel fuel where you are. However, please don't confuse these new BlueTec diesels with the ones you had before; they are totally different animals.

Different for the better. I do not own one, but I have test-driven one and was very impressed. I didn't smell anything. Until you hit around 4,000 RPM, you really don't hear anything. At 4,000 RPM you hear very faint diesel clatter. The torque in these engines is phenominal! I suggest you try one for yourself. Plus, with BlueTec, the cleanliness of the emissions rivals many hybrids.
I own CDIs. There is no smell, torque is massive, fuel efficiently is incredibly good. Like someone said before: don't compare to what you may have know before. Your Mercedes CDI will outperform in all its aspects an everyday gas car.

i drive the 07 bluetec here in southern ontario,and had a E300 turbodiesel(99)
they are not smelling anymoore, they are not stinking.
even the new kind of fuell is not smelling at al,and the fuelconsumtion versus a gasoline engine is at least 25% less, especially if you have more coldstarts and "lowspeddriving".
i like my bluetec and my garage is attached to the house
I've considered the diesel also, but my situation is that I also drive only 12,000 Km (about 7500 miles) a year, mostly short distances of a couple of miles at a time. I'm never even going to get the diesel to a proper operating temperature (I think). Don't you want diesel only if you're driving 15,000 or more miles/year?
Gas for your low annual mileage needs, plus acceleration is actually better, even without massive torque because of higher horsepower.

I already like you.
You make sense.
I drove MB diesels from different era (as well as VW Rabbit diesel) and will double what is already said, that there is humongous difference between 44 HP Rabbit from the past and 174, or over 200 HP in modern diesels.
Even I like our W210 with diesel the E320cdi stands up several categories higher.
I am just selling our 97 MB diesel model. Even with 245,000 miles it is consider a junk in our family, the people who come over for test drive said "WOW".
