E270 CDI performance problems

Hi There

When traveling with revs below 1800 the car is dead and as soon as the revs go beyond 1800 you can year that slight diesel knock the engine makes and then it pulls off like it should do.
What could be the problem?

The other thing I noticed is when the car is started when it is cold it used to have a loud diesel knock and as soon as it is hot the engine runs softer. Now the engine sound the same when ever it is cold or hot. Don't know what it means.

Another problem the car is extremely heavy on fuel.

Any help, suggestions will be appreciated.

Don't know really but the CDI idle noise gets reduced from multiple injections per power stroke. A friend of mine told his CDI had a problem with the pressure sensor at the high pressure rail, if you take the wire off from the sensor, the system would not regulate the pressure down but would work at max injection pressure. This again resulting to a single injection as it would otherwise inject too much diesel when running idle. I never checked if a car like yours would behave the same way. I assume this would need star diagnosis or some special equipment anyway to diagnose and fix. Something related could be the cause for the diesel noise but the rest should be unrelated.

The car was on the star system but nothing could be found.
There is clearly a problem with the car but the dealer can't find anything wrong.

That is unfortunate, I wonder if engine experts here would be able to point for further diagnosis.

Could it still be an injector issue even if no error codes existed? I thought the CDI control unit would give a fault code if the injection isn't as expected.

check your catylitic converter muffler it may be partially blocked

loss of power when going up hill what could be the potential problem is it MAF or MAS sensor?

Mercedes 270 cdi avantgarde -loss of power when going up hill

Last night when i was driving on the motorway the car did 80 miles an hour but when i was going up hill the power dropped to 40 miles an hour and it has happened twice on hilly road, what could be the potential porblem. the car runs fine on level road the problem only occurs when i am going up hill. It is a automatic car. I was reading about MAF and MAS sensors but not sure which one potentially causing the problem.i would be grateful for your assistance

Replace the fuel filter and see if things improve. Most loss of power issues on diesels is due to fuel starvation caused by a dirty filter.

You say it heavy on fuel, diesel knock all the time and low power at low RPMs.

You may have an injector problem. Is the car smoking under normal acceleration?

If it were a plugged fuel filter is would be starved and most likely not heavy on fuel.

You will probably need to put it on SDS and see if it can tell what the problem is.

I called AA their computer could not detect anything then they took me to a mercedes specialist garage and their computer showed fault with Air Pressure sensor also called charge pressure sensor. So far its good and but the problem persists then it could be MAF Mass Airflow Sensor as i have been told.
