The 13,000 miles is still variable based on driving conditions. There is a bias programmed into the FSS which will increase or decrease the target interval despite the initial 13,000 miles set for the next service.
If you are in traffic, a firm application of power will clear out the motor and it's systems which are affected by extended periods at idle. A couple times a day, full power application will clean things out, a quick check in the rear view mirror and the absence of "haze" tells you the motor is cleared.
Also in colder climates, start the car and drive. Allowing any modern diesel to "warm up" is one of the worst things you can do to the engine. Getting it underway and under load is the surest way to reduce engine wear during warm-up. Diesels because of their unrivaled thermal efficiency at nearly 50% require load to get them up to operating temperature and keep them there. Modern oils require heat to activate the additives (typically 160F or greater). Short drives without reaching operating temperature simply result in a greater bias for your next service interval which will cause it to occur sooner if the car sees routine short trips without the oil reaching operating temperature.

Good advice !
An added benefit to this procedure is the remarkably quick time for the heater to respond. As we head into cooler weather, I have noticed that within 10-15 seconds of start-up, the heater is sending out warm air into the cockpit. I have never experienced such a rapid heater response in any other vehicle that I have driven.
I do not know if this is unique to the Bluetec, or whether the I6 CDI responds in a similar manner.
I hope everyone on this forum appreciates the depth and wealth of knowledge that is present, and offered freely here. Simply...You guys know too much! ;-) I have an '07 E350 (no actual need for the Bluetec info), but I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread. Thanks...
