could be anything from either of the 2 batteries to a bad battery control unit or outdated software in the battery control unit.

Shouting on the forum cannot have been the only thing to cure the issue, or did you expect it go away by waiting? Anything Streetglover suggests has been done for the car, has it visited dealer service for the related recall items? Please explain what has already been done.

I replaced the battery in the trunk. How can I tell about the software?

you also have a battery under the hood, it is a backup battery for extra power for the SBC unit and other crap. only way to tell if software needs to be updated is have the dealer diagnosis the issue.

I'm afraid you need Streetglover or some his colleagues with an SDS computer to figure out the SW and updated it if necessary. I would use dealer services to check if the regulator recall concerns this car, and other fixes that should be free. At least you did not say anything has been done and an 03 car definitely should have some recall work.

Could it be the BCM? I have a friend who dels with a lot of Mercedes, and he was saying he has seen a lot of them go bad on this model E-Class.

Have a MB dealer check your VIN in VMI for all outstanding recalls and service campaigns applicable to your vehicle.

MBUSA Service Campaign 2005060008 JUN06 (e320 VIN range: A014562 – A418838) covers BCM programming and/or replacement. Note Service Campaigns do not expire therefore if included you are entitled to a no cost repair.

Upon inspection if it does turn out to be the BCM and your vehicle is not included in the campaign mention DTB P-B-54.21/155a depending on the BCM installed, they will flash or replace it. Normally a DTD does not extend past warranty however, it is a known problem and MBUA considers the original BCM defective therefore, request cost free modification.

I had the exact same problem with my 2004 E500, it turns out the small battery under the hood was not holding a charge and went bad causing the light to go on. I would have the battery tested. I switched mine out and the problem was fixed. Cheap fix if that is what it is.

most of the times it is the auxillary battery under the hood. I have seen a few BCM's fail.
