Choppy acceleration??

A friend of mine has a 2006 E350 4matic. Here's the situation. After the cold starts in morning the car lurches 4 or 5 times under acceleration at low speed. Problem goes away the rest of the day and can not always be replicated. The dealer (not surprisingly) found nothing on the test drive (warm engine) or on the diagnostic. My buddy thinks it's a transmission issue. My sense was an electronic issue affecting the air-gas mix. Thoughts or advice that I can pass on?

My car is rarely outside overnight but when it is, its very fussy until it warms up. I get the same little lurches you describe. Slow throttle response as well and very clunky steering. I expect all cars to need a warm up in winter but the E really wants to be in a garage.

I have an E500 with 69k miles bought it used at 64k and 2 weeks later its sloughish. I took it to my Benz guy he said Trans is slipping. I take it to the Dealer they say everthing is fine. One week later, surprisingly I go to use the stick mode and It felt like my transmission fell. Its calld like interchage, of Transmission fluid and Radiator fluid. I know it sounds wierd, but do this. Open up your Radiator Over flow tank while its COLD, and if you see some kind of creamy stuff floating then look further. Or While its Hot if you see like an OILY residue this is a sign of the interchage. My friend has an 320*03 E and same thing. I dont think MB has fix this yet. Lots of $$ if you dont have Insurance if its past 50k. Ill never buy another MB to many issues. Ive been taking my E500 *03* to the Dealer for about 2 months now, becuase of a rought Idle. First they said oh you need Spark wires, then it still is rough, So then its engine mounts, still rough, then its the Gas filter, Still rough even rougher and now I dont have a gas gauge and ran out of gas on the HIGHWAY Today.. GERRRRRRRrr. I was mad.. so this car isnt worth the pain. Ive come to the Conclusion its just a weekender unless you have the $$ to dish out on monthly maintenance.. Well good luck

Normally, the gear changes on our E500 are so smooth that they are barely noticeable, but when the engine is cold and temperature are freezing cold we can feel the gear changes when the car has just been started.

It takes a little while for the car to reach its normal self if it is really cold. You might be able to do a kickdown and tear away, but it is not good for the engine, so we try to keep the engine below 1500 rpm until it is warm, takes about ten minutes.

Well, be really light on the pedal when the car has just been started until the engine is warm, and if the problem persists when the engine has become warm (ten minutes or so) then there is a technical problem a workshop should fix.

Mine is also rough when it is cold, especially when it is really cold like it has been here in Cleveland this winter. Out of the garage in the AM it is fine, but at the end of the day sitting out it shifts rough until it is warmed. It can hunt and shift slowly and hard when it is very cold.

Rough Idle and Missing

My 2003 E500 has a rough idle and missing when driving , I use only 93 in it

I have replaced the Air Mass and still the same , I have noticed a rattle under the drivers door under the car and it sounds like a cat but not sure how many are under this one but my question is could this cause a rough idle and cause the car to miss and i mean miss bad sometimes when it takes a min to clear up , I have also tryed some gas treatments not much better there either , Also when it does start missing really bad if i turn it off and then right back on it goes away

Any Help is greatly helpful

Thank in advance

Bad cats can cause all the symptoms you describe.
Tap on them gently with a rubber mallet or a soft blow hammer.
If you here any noise you have your diagnosis.

Its funny you have said this , I tryed that last night (but only the drivers side) and heard no nosie i thought i would hear rattling or something and not one thing came from that so i will try the other side and see but then again it could still be the cats? , The car runs great with lots of power in the long end its just at Idle or slower speeds , I will tell you i have never replaced the plug wires , But then again they look like they could last awhile , Anything else would be great if anyone knows

Thanks Again
