How to remove shift knob

Can anyone provide fairly specific instructions on how to remove and replace the automatic shift know on an '04 E320? I am thinking of replacing the knob. Obviously, I have the leather boot. Thanks in advance.

Hello,
I have asked this same question a few months ago. With no replies.
I have an E 320 2003 with a leather boot shift knob as well.
I wanted to replace it with a 2007 E class shift knob that has the
Mercedes - Benz logo in the center.
Any thoughts on how to replace? Thanks in advance for your replies.

1. simply pop up the shift-wood-plate from ash tray opening. (no tool require)

.
.
2. carefully remove the gear-shift indicator wires. (no tool require)

.
.
3. pull entire assembly upward until you can see entire chrome-shifter. (no tool require)
.
4. twist the black ring counter-clock-wise. (no tool require)

.
.

5. shift knob can simply pull straight up. (no tool require)

Besides carefully disconnect the wire to the indicator, there is absolutely NOTHING you can break.

p.s., if you can find a way to replace the shift knob, please let me know. I mean, HOW to RETAIN the original leather boot. Without leather boot, it is going to be DEAD ugly.

The leather boot can be removed from the wood plate very easily.
Ask your wife to trim the leather boot and hand stich the opening for you?

then you can buy different kind of shift knob off ebay.

Thanks for the pictures. I did this today, it is a "one piece" set up.
The shift knob and boot are together.
The dealer / parts said that you will have to purchase the complete 2007 set up. The 2007 shift knob although it has the leather boot, can be changed, it is not a one piece set-up and the shift knob is round, a different shape and design from the 2003-2006 models. Matching the wood would be / could be a problem as well as the cost of the new part.

Does anyone know the cost for the entire 2007 shift knob assembly? I have a 2004 W211 Avantgarde and would like to replace the aluminium base with bird's eye maple as well as the knob it's self (and the boot).

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Warren
