Smile Fuel Mileage E350 '06

Gents,

You are not going to believe this but today I drove from Aurora, IL to Peoria, IL. Roundtrip is 260 miles and most is on open road. I averaged 29.3 MPG which is better than my wife's Scion tC by 2 MPG. I had the air on and was running with the cruise control set at 70 mph.

I've never drove it anywhere other than work and back so you are talking about 20 miles per day. I average 21.5 MPG so this was a pleasant surprise.

My boss and I needed to make a road trip to HQ. He couldn't believe the mileage we were getting, especially since he owns a new Ford 4X4 and his wife drives a Navigator. Both of them get roughly 13 MPG.

I can say that I'm really happy because I thought it was time to trade in our gas guzzlers. I had an '02 S500 and my wife had a '04 Grand Cherokee. Both we averaging 17 MPG so we are doing a lot better than before.

It really depends on how you drive. I have an "05" E500 and cruising at 65 averaging about 50mph I get around 23mpg. In everyday driving I average 19-20 back and forth to work. Close to 30 is really good gas mileage considering the weight of an E350.

E320CDI will deliver 37 mpg on that run, using cheaper fuel.

Kent,

You're lucky that you can buy a CDI. I wanted one, but my state doesn't allow the MB diesels -- ended up with the gas version. Maybe in the future.......

Regards,
paul...

There was an E320 CDI in the showroom when I bought mine. I've used quite a few diesels in Europe and they get great gas mileage.

I don't understand why we don't push diesel technology more in the USA. It's safe to say we could reduce the amount of oil imported for driving by a minimum of 20%.

Question. What if I moved to California or New York where the CDI is not sold. Would I be able to register my car????

A lot of people easily get around the "CARB" issue. Buy a car, register it in another state (relatives house) until you have 7500 miles. Once you have 7500 miles you can then register it in all 50 states no questions asked.

I am still amazed that people consider 17mpg to be "Good Fuel economy"?

The Bluetec in the ML, R and E will be a welcome addition to the US fleet with oil approaching $80+ in the near future...
