Amonia Smell from Exhaust?

I started my car in the garage yesterday morning on a cold start and and had to get out to grab something and there was an amonia like smell. Thought something may have spilled not the car.

This morning again - same thing - forgot something got out and smell was there.

Think its the car - would anyone know what this smell is. Its not like the suplhur smell I get from other cars whose converter has gone wry.

Dallas,
Never heard of anyone having ammonia-like odors coming from the exhaust. Have you had the exhaust gases checked to see if everything is within spec for emissions?

Good luck,

Regards,
paul...

Just got my emmisons test as well as state inspection done for the registration renewal - not sure if that covers this odor?

RE: Amonia Smell from Exhaust?

I was thinking that if the emission specs were off, then the combination of those gases could possibly cause ammonia-like odors.

I've run out of ideas.........

Dallas

Sounds like you got a bad batch of fuel. Ammonia is an additive in fuel mixes to reduce the production of other pollutants (but you have to add just the right amount) or you'll smell the byproduct. Catalytic converters won't break it down, and when your exhaust is cold, you are condensing it to a near liquid.

Nothing to worry about. Maybe change brands of fuel.

And to support what Lear31a said, it might be worth it for you to pull out a couple of spark plugs (not from the same cylinder)to see how they're burning -- this could suggest changing fuel companies of just the location where you buy it.

Paul...

What type of gas do you use and from what brand?

I agree with paulv, or you could find one of those Texan straight-a-ways and run her up to 100 or so. The speeding ticket might hurt less than the labor cost at the dealer.[:D]
Back in the early 70's, still in the Marines I got a ticket from one of your boys catching up to my Chevelle Super Sport 396 with his 440 equipped Polara. He spoted my insigna and let me off the hook, turned out to be a fellow grunt from years past. He ran me down at the backside of 110. Mind all you young pups, that was back in the day of 3.83 rear ends, bias ply tires and the tach was ALWAYS bigger than the speedo. I only wish they had E55's back then!

RE: Amonia Smell from Exhaust?

PaulV - Not a realy expert as to what I should look at if I get the plugs out. Can you elborate what I should look for?

I only use Exxon. This is the 1st time I noticed this smell - then again 1st time I used this gas station which was on the way.

Lear - When I got the car I did take close to 115, was on the new turnpike on a stretch where no cops can hide. Had slow down as traffic was comming up real fast. Might do that just for the hell of it. It will only cost $50 for a lawyer to get me off the ticket - still cheaper than an MB dealer mechanic
