Had my '99 E55T AMG dropped off at the house today, finally all the way here from Japan! I've imported some vehicles before, but this is my 1st ever Euro, so I'm dealing with a bit of a learning curve, lol.
The car was shipped with very little fuel, so the dock workers cranked it till the fuel pump cooked itself, and took out the battery as well. I had it towed to a shop in the lower mainland, BC and they diagnosed and repaired it for me, threw some fuel in, and I re-arranged shipping to get it home. I'm dealing with a bunch of little electrical issues that I suspect are related to the issues upon arrival.
I'm still taking inventory of all the "niggles" and figuring out what all the buttons do/how things are supposed to work, but so far:
-couldn't get the windows to roll up, now some of them work with auto, and the driver's doesn't. I'm sure there's a DIY for this, but I'm not even sure what words to search for, any pointers?
-there's a chatter type noise coming from the brakes or ABS system, it's speed variable for frequency, but seems to come on if the traction control is triggered, and when you let off the gas, as well as under moderated to heavy braking. Maybe a bad wheel sensor?
-dash says "service soon" on the display. How does one figure out what service is needed/clear the message?
-dash says a bulb is burnt out, I think it's one of the parking lights in the smaller front lenses
-the car does have Xenon headlights, despite what the dealer claimed, problem is they are obviously aimed for a RHD world like Japan, with the kickup in the beams to the left of the car, is there a way to adjust this, or are these RHD headlights? The e-code markings have arrows pointing both directions, but I'm not sure what the markings all mean. Hella brand housings.
-car feels underpowered, I wonder if its in limp mode or something. Couldn't spin the tires, tried turning ESP off, there's probably a sequence I don't know about or something. When it's up at higher speeds it seems to have lots of pull, but much less than I expected of a 354hp car. It's also a lot quieter than I expected.
I can't help but think many of the issues are related.
Enough complaining, the car looks great! Interior and exterior are in great shape, save a small dent on the rear corner I was aware of before purchasing. The wheels all have a bit of curb rash, but nothing that can't be fixed. Tires look to be in good shape, lots of tread left. The 1st aid kit is missing. Back seats look like they've never been sat in. Black on black leather interior.
I'll be getting winter tires for it, was thinking of putting them on the stock wheels, but not sure how that would work/look with staggered wheels. I imagine staggered tire widths could lead to some "interesting handing" in winter conditions, and 245's on all corners could look weird with the rears stretched more, not sure.
