Hello, I am posting here instead of PM in case anybody else needs the specs. I have a 2001 E55 4-Matic wagon, 540 Barolo red (flat, not the new Barolo metallic red) with a special dark tan interior from AMG factory (Z98 color option). I have been told from AMG this is the only 540 E55 4-matic wagon ever built with a host of special options. It is nice to see another Mercedes friend out there in the world with a 4-matic 210 E55 wagon!!!!
The only info in the E55 4-matic supplement book on the chassis alignment is as follows :
Please let me know if there is anything else you need, there are 3 supplement books that came with the wagon and I can copy and email you anything that you need.
Remember to keep changing your front diff hypoid gear oil every 35,000km!!! Mercedes had first said to change it every 50,000 but then changed it in late 2001 to 35,000km. It seems to be the only weak point on the 4-matic E55 if not changed!
Hello Mike, thank you for the kind words about my wagon. To answer your questions, no...the 210 4-matic E55 was built for Europe only. During the entire production run from early 2000 to late 2002 there were only about 120-140 cars built and of those the vast majority are sedans. Every time I speak to AMG they tell me there is no hard number on how many were made, they were "custom order only". They were not on the AMG build list, but they were on the special order list. I am told there are under 50 wagons covering all the years. Of those, almost all were in Germany but a few went to other countries. My car was ordered for Switzerland and was built with options for a true cold weather 210 like special glass, Webasto secondary heater, ect. Only a handful of cars/wagons came in any color but black, white or silver.
None of the cars conformed to the US standards so they were never offered here. According to DOT in Washington, the only 210 4-matic E55 wagon in the US is mine. My wagon went through almost 2 years of EPA, DOT and NHTSA conversion. I was also told that under the new standards of both DOT and EPA that you could no longer import and convert one for the US. That being said, it should stand that I have the only one here in the US (at least registered as such )
It really is a shame they did not come to the US for this is one of my favorite cars ever built. I LOVE the 210 cars regardless of motor. I fell in love with the 4-matic and to have it matched with the 55 motor is really perfect. The car was built in Austria like all the 4-matic cars and then shipped to AMG in Germany for finishing. In turn it does not have rust issues or other problems that seem to show up on the non 4-matics.
Hi Lotus, thank you very much for your answer and congratulations for your splendid car,i too have the 3 books but i do not understand how much must be toe in (anterior and posterior wheels) camber and caster (how much ° ?)
I agree totally with you ,E 55 4 matic Wagon is fantastic muscle, confortable, very fast car (mine is withouth limit speed sistem and is about 300 Km H maximum speed)personally i have reached 280 Kmh and i stopped but the car went over,Bye Antonino
All I know is what you know....Mercedes said to align the wagon just like a E430 EXCEPT for what is in the three little books. I am going to have my wagon down at Brabus in the next few weeks and I will ask the question. I am fitting a set of snow tires/wheels to it and I want to make sure the wagon sits just right!
I have not been as fast as you, I have taken the wagon up to 265KM and I did not have any more road to go faster. It was still pulling somewhat hard, I know it will do much better. My wagon is also not limited in speed for I know the little additional book says they should be limited at 250KM. I am wondering if the cap was removed on mine when the EPA, DOT work was done. I know the ECU was modified (my wagon is Euro 4). That is another question I will ask when it is in the shop.
I believe the two photos of the alignment specs are for a non 4-matic E55 but they might be correct. I will try to get the answers and post them when I find out.
Antonino, did your wagon come with the rear emblems on the car from factory or did you have to add them (or are you using them at all)?
My wagon was ordered with the "Option 260, omission of model designation on the boot lid" but it did come with an AMG, 4-matic and E55 set in the glove compartment. I also noticed in one of the three little books it shows the emblems coming with the books (page 22 of the Teilekatalog / Part catalogue). I did add mine to the back but I wondered if all the E55 4-matic wagons came that way. I am very curious to see if you are running your wagon with designation on the back and if the factory put them on.
