My 01 E55 is experencing some clucking when downshifting when coasting to a red light and seems like shifting too fast at slow speeds. Should I change the fluid I'm at 80K and isn't the trans dipstick on the right side of the engine compartment why do we need a special tool from a dealer to measure the oil???
Transmission fluid needs to be replaced with precision. An ounce under or an ounce over can play havoc. Have the dealer do it. It sounds like you may require a new shifter module. Notorious for leaky seals. Hence, the clunk. Nonetheless, costly but cheaper than a new transmission. Good luck.
Precisely where I can not say. But, I can tell you that the module is sealed within the transmission or shifter assembly. And, with age the seal deteriorates allowing transmission fluid to seep unto the module causing the transmission to malfunction. Good luck. Transmission gurus feel free to jump in and help this bro out.
doing ECU reset and mass air sensor cleaning will help alittle bit but only for a few months, the clunk will come back. I was quoted $250 for tranny fluid & filter swap, not a bad price imo.

There no dip stick It cap off and you have to buy a dip stick from MBZ to check the fluid level. Transmission fill /check tube is located in the middle by the firewall with red cap top (see attached pic) trandip.JPG
Even though MBZ say it a life time fluid and don't need to be change. Get real..everything included fluid break down. I change my at 50K miles and it shift smooth through out gear change so change it and the filter. Your car will thank you later.

++1 Exactly right. I purchased my E55 with 40K on the clock, and was not about to wait until the end of time to change my tranny fluid. Changed it then, and plan on changing it every 50K as well.
At 55K miles my '02 E55 was downshifting harshly at lower speeds. My local dealer wanted $350 to flush the transmission. I elected to purchase the service tool for $25 (dipstick) on ebay, dropped the pan, cleaned and changed the filter and flushed / filled with Redline tranny oil. Per a mechanic friend, the old oil causes deposits to buildup in the valvebody causing the harsh shifts. After about a week of normal driving the transmission was back to its normal self. I have used Redline products in the transmissions of all my vehicles for 15 years with great results. Don't wait any longer change it now. My old oil was black and way past it's prime, the lifetime fill was a just a myth.

Keep us posted. I too changed my tranny fluid at 55K. So far so good at 65K.
