W210 Alloy Wheelbolts difference
Just this morning swapped my 18" AMG alloys for a spare set of normal Avantgarde alloys that came with my '96 W210 E420 Import. On fitting the Avantgarde alloys and retorquing the wheelbolts I've gone to test the vehicle and on going to move just an inch a horrible metallic sound can be heard as if the wheels are about to fall off! Do these alloys require different wheelbolts and if so what kind and where can I get them from (don't say the stealers!).
i belive the lug bolts you are gonna need have to be considerable smaller in length and in thread size. I had a tire shop put on my new tires and they used my oe bolts and bolted them right into my rear brake hardware which needed to be relaced take the rim and the car to a well know tire shop. Im sure they can tell you what type of bolt you are going to need. Hope that helps.

W210 E55 lug bolts are 12mm x 1.5 x 40mm (1.5"). When I mounted my aftermarket rims the OEM lug bolts were too long and of the wrong threading pattern (threading begins ~1/4 below the lug bolt head). The remedy is 12mm x ~1 x ~28mm (~1.1") with threading beginning at the lug bolt head. The stealership charges $11 per unit. You should be able to locate them at $2 - $3 per unit. Good luck.
Does anyone know what type/size/part number I need as I see there are quite a few sets of them on fleabay.
Just buy the lug bolts that fit the source vehicle, that way you know they'll fit fine.
And no one has said it, so I will: but be sure you don't move the vehicle with those on there. You'll damage things and really kick yourself then.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

As I stated in my earlier post..." The remedy is 12mm x ~1 x ~28mm (~1.1") with threading beginning at the lug bolt head.. The most important figure here is ~28mm. However, 25mm - 30mm should be compatible. Also, make sure the head of the bolt is compatible with the OEM; cone or rounded... I forgot. Good luck.

Thanks for the response.....I take it that the 28mm figure is the threaded length, if thats so what is the total length of the bolt I require as they seem to quote this more so than the actual thread length....thanks.....Simon

OEM are ~60mm in total length. You will require a lug bolt which is 10mm less or ~50mm in total length. The remedy to your issue is that your aftermarket lug bolts require a shank (or threading) of 1" or ~28mm.

Just measured my Original Wheel Bolts and they are the following measurements:
22mm Threaded Length,
12mm Diameter,
Total Length of bolt from start to end is 70mm and the length from the tapered shank to the end of the thread is just under 50mm.
Finding 28mm threaded bolts for the right price on eBay is proving difficult!
