"Stupid Question" What is the right tire pressure?
Hello all! This may seem like a stupid question, but I have to ask.I have an E-55 with 18's on it. The tire sidewall says "51 PSI max inflation". Are you supposed to inflate to the max? If not, what is the basic formulation (50% of max, 60% of max?). I have always filled mine within 5 Psi of max.Anyone have any idea what standard practice is? Thanks for any help! Brian
I generally apply the useful knowledge of whatever the owners' manual says. For my non-AMG variant there are two different specs depending on whether you'll be driving sustained high speeds.
It's also if I'm not mistaken the inside of the fuel door.
The only time I would deviate from that would be if I noticed unusual tire wear (center wearing faster, over-inflated, edges wearing faster, under-inflated).
So long as you have the proper-spec tires (particularly for minimum load rating) you can safely adopt the logic of the MB engineers when they designed your car and use the manual's recommendations.
Take care and enjoy the ride,
Greg

Look inside your fuel door. The infomation is in there. I set my @ 34psi front /37psi rear.
It doesn't matter what size wheel you have, air pressure is the same inside regardless of size.
Thanks for the replies. Thanks for the warm "welcomes" too! The tires on the car are not the original equipment. Does this make a difference in regards to what it says in the owners manual or door panel? I guess my question should be: How much air should you put into a tire that reads " 51 psi max inflation"? Or is it more relevant to use the owners manual guidelines even if the tires are not original equipment? Thanks again, Brian

The "51 psi max inflation" is just that: the absolute maximum that should ever be in that tire for safety purposes. "max" has NOTHING to do do with what should actually be put in the tires under practically all driving situations.

The fuel door specs recommend 32 psi front, and 33 psi rear. I run mine at 33 psi front, and 34 psi rear. The latter seems to be the perfect compromise between traction and roll resistance.
