Hey all...just picked up a 2002 E55 this week. Black on black, 45K miles.
A couple questions:
One issue I have is that the rear sunshade is broken. There is a long "arm" or rectangle shaped pole that had a platic ring broken on one end and it was fundamentally cracked off on the other. MB stated that the whole shade needed to be replaced and it would cost $1200 just for the shade. Any ideas?
Also, for winter driving, has anyone just bought tires and switched back and forth between summer and winter tires on the same rims? I have Pilot's on there (which appear to be brand new) and like the stock rims and don't want to upgrade. I don't really see the point of 2 full sets of wheels at $40 for remounting and balancing.
If that is not the case, I did some searching but didn't find much - are there 17" rims that fit on an AMG - I understand the calipers require a special offset.
Your recently acquired E55 is also your recently acquired princess. Two words: High maintenance. But she is worth it. (1) You can pay the stealership (though an independent MBZ shop may charge less), or you can DIY (do it yourself). If you choose the latter, here is a recent link that may aid you: http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210...ade-stuck.html (2) I live in sunny CA where winter is not an issue. However, I am under the impression the Michelin PS2's will get you through the winter. Someone with winter driving experience may correct me if needed. (3) I believe our stock 18" rims were designed to clear our larger AMG brake setup. FYI, front are 18X8:245/40/18;(offset)ET31, and rears are 18X9:275/35/18;(offset)ET35. Aftermarket rims require a great deal of detail, or precise specifications. Welcome to the forum, and good luck with your new princess.
Ugh! Don't tell me that. I have been consistently fooling myself that this will be as solid as a Honda!
Anyway, being a former Land Rover owner, I know all about the care and feeding, and visiting the chat boards often to find solutions vs. the dealiership. I have a "hooptie" car sitting on the driveway to use as a parts run car or bad weather vehicle.
I have Pilot AS on my 02 with 50% treat left on them and they are pretty slippery in just cold rain here in TX. So if you live somewhere with snow get snow tires you can try to limp though the winter with what you have but why? Your spare is a 17 and the smallest wheels and tire the factory could fit over the front brakes so that should be your starting point for another set for winter use.
I would get a second set of wheels and tires for winter the polished rims on the stock wheels will require a lot of cleaning in the winter time so get some cheap one that are already damaged to using in the snow.
