'01 E55 check engine light

successfully replaced the rear window regulator on my '01 E55 last nite- thanks to the instructions posted on this site. took ~2 hours; piece of cake. thanks guys.
then, this morining, while driving on the freeway, the engine started sputtering, began losing power quickly, and check engine light flashed until it stayed on permanently. i pulled onto a side road to wait for the tow.
the car's now at my indy mechanic, but this is my first time there, and i'm wondering if anyone on this site has ideas as to what i'm in for here?
thanks in advance.

If you haven't had the MAF replaced then it's most likely it. Pretty common problem.

just an update. this is really turning into some sort of saga...
so, after my mechanic ran diagnostics, i'm looking at broken spark plugs, no compression in one cylinder, and metal shavings in the oil. this one hit me completely out of the blue. the engine is now being disassembled to determine extent of damage. best case scenario- i'll need a new head or two. worst case- new motor.
1. any ideas as to what couldve caused this? the car has 50k miles and seems to have been taken care of well. i've only been driving it for ~4 months now, and everything seemed fine until that fateful day.
2. any ideas as to where i could a decent deal on a new/remanufactured motor?
