Good question David, I'm also looking to fit a roof rack/cycle rack to my E55 AMG estate too. Been looking on Ebay for genuine Mercedes roof rack, but no luck so far.
The roof bars were deleted as standard option on the 210 in 01, they were offered as a factory option along with the protectve strips. I made the mistake of ordering the "carrier bars", they are secured to the rails by cables and locks but stick up at least 3 inches above the rails and were generally ugly. I did manage to unload them to someone who was planning on attaching bike racks and things.
I did get the 2000 crossbars which are the thinner ones with a knob that attaches to the rails, they are pricey. I dont think the 211 bars will fit. I would have the parts guy search under the 2000, the rubber stips are $50 and the bars were $180 ea I think.
There were some bars on E-Bay a while back
Try this dealer and do a search for roof or cross bars. Duval Motor Cars

OK... I went to the Merc garage and took the plunge. Bought OEM cross bars for 311chf - about 200 euros. I know its expensive, but rather that than i mess about with non-standard ones... ill let you know if they fit.
200 eu is cheap, is that for one or two. I paid $180 each US, and have only used them once, when we planned a ski trip. Be carefull they dont sell you the carrier bars. I got burned on my first set.
Best wishes!
Congrads, if you are going to add the roof strips get some body moulding and cut them in to strips. The roof bars and rack are a real dissapiontment compared to my 85 300 DTD and more resemble the flimsiness of my Mercury Sable wagon
