Wow, I pulled off my wheels for the frist time (as opposed to my mechanic), only to see that the E55 does not have SS Brake Lines. I'm curious as to why AMG does not use them? Has anyone changed theirs to SS brake lines? If so, which brand?
I'm pretty sure that no SS brake line is DOT approved, especially back in 1999-2001 time frame. So no manufacturer would supply them. Even putting aftermarket ones on in most states could fail you. Not that anyone will ever look, but just saying.
FrankiE55 - Do you know why SS lines are not DOT approved? I'd be interesting to know. It seems they would be more reliable and safer than other materials.
I believe it has something to do with the fact that if there is damage to the internal hose you will not actually see it because of the steel mesh, and upon hard braking will have a failure. I'm not really sure though honestly.
Not true. Many companies are NOW DOT approved. Goodridge is one (Tirerack sells them) but honestly their quality is not that good and their Gen1 lines had lotta problems. After seeing Stop-tech lines I realized they are best by far. Stay away from Suzuka Ebay lines.
The reason they are not DOT approved is b/c DOT is more of a political thing than a safety thing. Most Race parts are not DOT approved b/c it requires A LOT of $$ for DOT testing and usually most companies would rather just sell the parts as non DOT approved instead of having to go through the hassle of getting them DOT approved. Just b/c its DOT approved does not mean it is better that non DOT approved parts. SS lines are infact much safer than regular ones (if designed properly, like the stoptech lines). Hope that helps.
yup those are the ones. The reason they are the best is they have protective liners around the ss mesh so that protects it from the elements, bare lines can get sand & dirt on them and over time can actually get through and damage the teflon line under the mesh so the protective layers are a must.
