I posted a couple months ago about putting the HPS Gen 1 s/c I bought off Dan @ Godspeed.
After the obligatory snickers and well-wishing from forum members, we started. The install went very smooth but the car ran badly..... so much for Adam (VP at HPS) saying this is a plug-n-play system.
so far:
The MAF apparently failed concurrent with the install. but my '02 was also at 52k miles so I was not surprised.
Then we realized the FMU was not doing it's job and the original gen 1 kit provided an FMU that was non-adjustable so we stepped up the the new one they use in the Gen 2 which is adjustable. That made that much better.
So currently we have a smooth running motor, 350 RWHP and 480 ft lbs torque.
We think HPS put the wrong pulley in the kit. Is it possible that the E430 and the E55 have the same air draw? I think not so my mechanic is verifying pulley size.
The plan is to get the right (smaller) pulley on the s/c so it keeps up with the motor plus we want to add Omey's new crankshaft pulley since I have a leadfgoot and really hate the lag off the line no matter how small it is.
Regardless of the last couple issues, the change in performance is significant. The acceleration is downright scary now, I had a non-racing type of friend take me out to lunch yesterday and I gave him a demo for about an 1/8th mile. I am still cleaning the poo off his seat... :-)
All in all, I am disappointed in how much additional troubgleshooting was required but the Magnuson/Eaton MP90 is still a very nice piece of hardware and definitely improved the performance significantly.
I'm happy you got it to work but how can you complain about a system that is not even being produced anymore? I'm surprised HPS even gave you support at all on a system that they don't make anymore and they didn't even sell to you. That being said, I still wish someone did provide these systems, the Gen 2 seems like a nightmare and adding a blower seems like the only real way to add significant power to this car.
Always cracked me up how HPS was unable to pull this off. They must have been under capitalized. I'm looking into putting a blower on my BMW M3 - lots of quality choices - Dinan, Active AutoWerks, VF Engineering, Tecknik, etc...
The M3 motor is WAY more high strung than our E55 motors, but several companies have figured it out, and with greta results (up ti 450 rwhp).
Still love my E55, but the time has passed where I would be interested in putting the $$$ into a blower for it now. Take me back 2 years ago and I was ready and willing to write the check to HPS - in hindsight, glad I didnt !
the main reason for the ease of tuning the M3 is that they have had both the OBD1 and the OBD2 ECU's cracked for about 5 years now. Simply adding a thicker headgasket is enough to add some nice, safe boost to that car.
There is no reason why our cars can't make 400+HP reliably NA (400 crank HP). In stock form it is making only 63HP/L which is pathetic by performance standards. I am determined to get us to that point.
once 400hp is acheived what kind of acceleration numbers do you anticipate? high 12's? thats what im hoping for with an improved trap speed too(somewhere bout 110+mph)....if with crank pulley, x-pipe, headers, and ecu tune, these numbers are acheived then i think we 55 members would be pretty satisfied since we would be spending $5k or LESS for this increase in power. i guess til we get test numbers b4 and after between a stock and modified 55 we wont know if its worth all of these mods...im hoping it is...realistically im looking for high 12's and 110+...plus with the ecu change speed limiter would be removed...HOPE WE CAN ACHIEVE THIS WITH ABOVE LISTED MODS.

Not going to happen N/A Mario from this board has a supercharged 1999 E55 traps 110+ no way in hell will you be able to hang w/Supercharged 210 & only 400crank hp, Mario has 400+rear wheel HP & lots of mods besides SC'er to get him there.

thats what im thinking too....i might have to start eyeing a w211K, '03+ TT CL/S600 OR CL/S55 as much as i like my w210....ALL OF THESE MODELS with mods are running in viper/zo6 territory.. RUNNING HIGH 11'S TO VERY LOW 12'S AND trapping at 120 or more .....thats incredible THAT THESE CARS HAVE WAY MORE HP AND ARE JUST AS LUXURIOUS....i cant see dropping $12k for a kleeman SC either.....THAT IS WHY I WAS HOPING A MODED W210 NA COULD RUN 12'S ..I GUESS ON THE ROAD I WOULD STILL BE WAY BEHIND THE NEWER SC/TT BENZES
LOL
