When I go to put my E55 gear shifter into Drive there is a rattle sound and feeling of something loose on my shifter. The gear shaft feels firm but it seems like something on shifter came loose or came off and is hitting the main chrome rod like a spring. I took off cover with window switches only to find a square block and the sound happens under the block where shift rod meets cable when I shift from P to N to D. Does anyone know this problem or have repaired this before? I have read all the W210 forums with only finding bushings loose on shifters but this does not seem to be my cars problem. Thanks
I think it's a gasket underneath the shifter that needs to be replaced, dealer change it on my C230K (I'll dig through my records just to be sure) parts price less than $1.00.

There are TWO Shift rod bushings...about a 10min job to replace
So Mark you think it's under car at transmission shift point? It feels and sound like under shifter inside my car. Maybe it's the bushings I've read that other w210's have problem with?
Does anyone have part numbers or diagram on w210 shifter? Thanks all.

wow how convienant! i recently have the same problem. sounds like something is lose under the shifter and it has gotten worse this past week. =( Just redid the front brakes too (keeping the C32 rotors and pads). That was $690 at the dealership. Not too bad actually.
So what was the sound under your shifter? Bushings? any help here would be great.

So it was the shifter bushing like all w210 cars have problems with. I took out my center console to get to the top of shifter and trans. Just when I pulled my shifter up I saw my bushing was gone. I went to the dealer paid $3 and installed it in about 15 min. Put everything back together and the job was complete.
Now I read people do this from under the car but our E55’s have so much in the way and the shifter bar linkage is so close to the body opening where shifter connects to trans link bar. I went through the top instead and it was faster and easier to do for me.
Have fun if you have to do this whole job takes about 1 hour.
