Was driving into my parking space last night...when I though I drove over something...the drivers side read window just sounded like it churned itself to pieces and the window just fell down - luckily I had read a post here about it being a common problem...and immedietly ordered a new regulator for around $80usd.
Was thinking about replacing the pasanger rear regulator while I am playing mechanic, so as to avoid this in the future ....has anyone done this?
How prone are these regulators to instantaneous death?

hehe, yup mine happened on the exact same window, infact every benz i've ever had model year from 1990-2002 that rear window has broken. Its not just the regulator, the motor itself is probably destroyed as well. Cost me $360 at the dealership including labor to fix. Good luck.
Very easy to fix, mine broke when I was on South Beach last Friday night. I called around to my parts people on Sat. and only the dealer had it in stock, and I did not want to wait to fix it so I paid $155. with tax (my parts guy could get it for $101 OEM) and in 45 min. it was installed by myself of course.
One thing when you go to remove door panel look for screw behind SRS AIR BAG plastic plate and remove panel slowly by window switch or the two mounting braces will come off the door panel and you will need a hot glue them back on. (Looking at panel these braces are on the side where the door meets the car when open)
thanks guys for the input...I beleive the motor still works - can hear it operating
I ordered the part from autohausaz for around $80 including the rivets (it stated OEM) but I assume its another comparable brand. Thanks for the headsup on the Airbag screw and the brackets on the door panels...I will extra cautious when pulling it.
Waiting on the part...perhaps I should have just gotten it from the stealership....Either way it forces me to drive the rover which now feels like a monster truck after driving the benzo for the past 2 months
My driver side rear window regulator broke down too, right before I paid the previous owner for my car when I was checking everything. Deducted the repair cost on the spot from the price. Its really a common problem.
Just replaced the regulator this afternoon - took me about 1.5 hours to do the entire job including cleaning the glass. Thanks to everyone again for great input - feels great to save some scoot and to know the job was done right. So glad to be driving her again!
