Dividends. 8 hours ago I bought my first MB. A 2000 E320 Silver on Silver with 74k miles. Stunning looking. Anyway, it *had* a cd changer problem up to the point where I applied the electrical tape per the instructions. The CD stereo lives again. Thanks all for sharing the knowledge. I'm now looking to do the ball joint repair. whoo hooo
I had magazine empty problem. Following your instructions, I took apart the CD Changer in the trunk as pictured (I couldn't figure out how to detach the power line), pressed against the lever that engages the magazine, inserted and removed the magazine a few times. The mechanism that pulls the CD from the magazine went down to the bottom position and started working again. Apparently it was stuck. I've used it everyday for a week with no problems. Thanks.
I have another car with a JVC CD changer. It was mounted horizontally and a year ago it stopped working. JVC doesn't make the parts to repair it anymore and they told me I'd have to replace it. I happened to try it one last time while it was positioned vertically and it worked so I changed the mounting to vertical and it has been working ever since with no problem.
1) I am a gal, and have NO small ELECTRONIC Experience, whatsoever, as will be painfully obvious in a moment.
OK, Found instrux on this forum, i believe, with PICS on Flickr for taking the entire damn thing out of the car and apart. It seems this unit is essentially an Alpine CHM-S620.
There are 3 little sets of wheels that turn and a worm drive or so, that apparently get stuck. They can be freed, fairly easily.
CAVEAT: Legal Disclaimer: IF YOU DO THIS, BE CAREFUL: DANGER WILL ROBINSON. Apparently there is/are a capacitor(s) than can shock you! I learned the hard way, received a relatively mild shock. (WHY DON'T THEY WARN YOU OF THIS) All the labels on my unit are in German!! Do i smell a lawsuit?
It takes a long time to do this, as there are 4 sets of rubber mounts that hold the unit , and 2 springs for orienetation mounting, and these take FOREVER to get back together. Esp after you have received a shock. And puncture one of the damn rubber mounts!
After two hours and said shock, it worked. Worked for the trip to Walmart to buy 2 new CD's, and then back to my driveway. Then it quit!! At least i got the Juno soundtrack.
It was worth it for the experience.
Now, any SUGGESTIONS for a BETTER UNIT That is IPOD ready? Crutchfield, who is usually inexpensive only lists like a $700 unit!!
Found this bulletin was the fix for my CD changer:
Audio System - Various CD Player Malfunctions
Date: October 28, 2002
Order No.: P-B-82.62/169b
Supersedes: P-B-82.62/169a dated Sept. 25, 2001
Group: 82
SUBJECT:
All Models
CD Changer Skipping During Playback, Radio Not Recognizing Magazine Insertion or
Loading Compact Disks From The Magazine / Radio States "No CD Changer"
If you encounter instances of radio states "no CD changer", CD changer skipping, radio not recognizing magazine insertion or loading compact disks from the CD magazine, check the two mechanical spring tension settings on the sides of the CD changer. The spring tension should be set to H for horizontal position on all 203 C-Class, 209 CLK and 463 G-wagon. All other models should be set to V for vertical position. For more information, consult the vehicle CD changer installation instruction.
Note :There may be vehicles already in dealer inventory and in customer possession with VPC installed CD Changers that have improper spring tension settings.
All CD changers received in warranty with the incorrect setting will be returned to the dealer and the corresponding claim will be debited. These decisions are final and no appeal is possible.
I am still having problems after doing this. The white lever goes to each CD slot, and hesitates, then still "Empty"
ANYONE ELSE????
Thanks, Love my MB's, hate the work!! (And the $1.50 screws)
I still get error messages occasionally on the CD player. My cure now is to work with the cd changer in the trunk removing and re-inserting the cartridge while having someone pushing the buttons on the radio/head unit to change cds after I reinsert the cartridge. This has been working on the first or second try every time and I haven't had to take the unit apart again to unjam the gears.
The annoying thing now is that it only holds 6 cds so I'm looking for spare cartridges. Is the dealer the only place to get them?
I thought the reason why mine wasn't working was the plugs were loose. I did the prescribed fix and it still said No CD changer so I decided to remove the unit and take it apart and found the problem. The ribbon of wires that goes from the plug receptacle to the circuit board was broken in half and that is why it did not work. Oh well, I am going to get the unit off of ebay to hook my xm up to the radio and it uses the cd plug port so I even though I am disappointed that it is broke it will work out for the best!
