Rattle sound from engine

Hi,
I now seem to have a "rattle" sound coming from the engine, when accelerate between 2,000 and 2,800 rpm. You hear it most when accelerate gently from stop sign, when car shifts from 1st into 2nd, you hear it up to 2,700rpm then goes away.

Car is going to dealer next week, different dealer this time, and they claim they will pull apart motor if they have to, in order to find what is making this sound.

Anyone experience anything like this?

Darius.

Are you using 91-93 octane fuel? This sounds like timing off or detonation from lower octane fuel like 89 unleaded. Is the sound like engine knock or ping? If your using higher octane. Is your engine overheating? Read this info to help understand http://www.streetrodstuff.com/Articl...ne/Detonation/

I have always used 92 to 94 octane. I have noticed that my oil is down about 40% on the dip stick, and I just had the oil changed about 1500miles ago. So clearly its burning lots of oil, yet I dont see any oil from the exhaust. However, my exhuast tips seem to get black sooner then normal after cleaning the tips.

I can't wait to see what the story is behind all this...

You don't want to run your engine with oil that low, you don't get warning on dash? Black tips is running rich fuel problems O2 censor maybe, or bad water temp. censor? When they changed your oil maybe they only put 5-6 qt's instead of 8. I don't think your car is burning that much oil unless it has over 150,000 miles on it. I think a good German Mercedes mech. is better to use then dealer. Because dealers $$$ and they don't always know what there doing unless you found a good guy that you trust at one. Please post what you find out.

Could be defective catalytic converter(s). They tend to fail and will make noise at low rpm's.

its your cats

I had the same problem. The engine was runing rich...still dont know why.... and because i like to drive it in a spirited manner it accellerated the issue. It starts off as a little rattle at mid range then one day your engine will sound like a diesel and you'll think the whole thing is coming apart. I just put straight pipes on and deleted the cats because im not subject to emissions.

Reason I deleted the cats was they cost 2500 EURO. Car runs absolutely fine, an odd side effect was some crazy sounding, exhaust that i think sounds good. I felt the car was too quiet to begin with, and mechanically there is no side effect. Even though eveyone says "back pressure this back pressure that."

There's my confirmation! LOL! if not then you need to put the car on a lift and listen. I had new cats that failed because my car was runnung very rich. Chk them again.

Also make sure it's not the belt tensioner in front of the engine . They tend to go bad i understand and rattle like Hell!

My engine mounts were going out and they caused a similar noise. Sounded like lifters tapping. New mounts and noise is gone.
