Rear brake caliper fell off, could of died.

I was driving up the coast to a customer yesterday when all of a sudden I heard a horrible noise coming from the left rear of the car. I was thinking I had a flat tire so I start to pull off the freeway on to the next exit. I was going about 85mph when I hit the brakes and SH*T there was no brakes. I blew through the stop sign at the top of the exit and almost drove right off the bridge. I soon gained control of my car and came to a stop on the side of the frontage road. I jumped out of the car to find my rear brake caliper mangled and dragging on the ground. Also I noticed my HRE wheel was leaking air. I guess when swinging the caliper hit the center of my HRE and broke the center valve stem. My car is still on the side of the road because I don't even want to deal with it. The part I dont understand is rear brakes havent been touched in 2.5 years. It seems weird it took that long and 50k of miles to come loose. The sad part is my other car "Mini Cooper" is also in the shop getting 7k worth of motor work done. Any way I thought I would just share my story.

Wow! That's not good! Please let us know if the mounting bolts broke, or came loose, or other! I'll check mine soon...

WTF....glad to hear you came out OK. The $$ on the wheel and new caliper is cheap compared to getting t-boned blowing a stop sign. Hope you had a clean pair after that!

I had one of my caliper mounting bolts fall of my rear caliper (long time ago) on a Mazda. So the caliper was flopping around on the one bolt. Made a horrendous noise….but I still had some brakes. It was entirely my fault. Taught me to check those three times after every brake job!

I’m curious about the lack of bakes….did the pistons come out of the caliper? Was it the loss the brake fluid and pressure or some interference by the ABS/Stability system that caused the lack of any braking power?

just pick up some new rotors and brake pads. But I just noticed I need those tiny little pins that hold in the rear pads. It should be back on the road tomorrow but with a spare tire. The HRE rims is being fixed right now.
