So...opened my "OEM" flat hood emblem that arrived yesterday. It has a machined aluminum base, threaded post underneath with a t bar and nut, 2 white plastic inserts and a plastic MB badge that is held onto the aluminum base by the friction of the plastic inserts (which take a little work to jam into the holes).
Aluminum base fits into the existing recess and is held on by the t-bar and nut underneath. Plastic badge sits on top of the hood, held flat by the friction pins.
Not exactly what I had in mind.....
Only other flat badge setup I can find is sold by some guys on eBay who appear to have bought a bunch of the integrated hood star units ($24/each is best I can find), taken them apart, pulled the star and spring, inserted a machined flat aluminum cap with the MB star on it and are selling them for $100 (including shipping). This exactly replaces the existing star base (same thing) and fits tight. All metal, no overlap, easy install.
Any other sources? $75 premium for a good idea and a scap of metal with a star on it seems a bit much, but scarcity has its price.
Anyone want the OEM flat badge cheap? $25 gets it sent to you anywhere in the US via priority mail. Little white inserts already installed for your conveniece....
i bought the same badge you did. was okay with it but the diameter was so large
that it didn't follow the slope of the hood and would catch lint and other cooties.
in a moment of weakness i purchased the one sold on the other board put together
by forum member in Texas. sold them for $100. base is bomb proof, 5 sec twist/
spring mechanism sold by MB. Flat badge was smaller and fit the divot in the hood
of my E320. i'm not fond of the white star, wishing it were silver/chrome but all
n all, it's 'aw-ite'
the one on left was the $35 one from Jerry -- one on right is the $100 one

Here's a post from a UK-based MB forum where a 124 owner was frustrated with his upright star being repeatedly stolen.

I have spoken with DFWDude via email, and the reason he no longer makes his emblems is that he ran out of the order of white starts that he had had produced in China. He would take these emblems and attach them to the Star mounts that he bought from his local dealer. (Which was the bottleneck in his production process)
If you take the time to look at the many threads regarding his product, it is fairly evident that he doesn't steal them off of W124s. To imply that he did is weak, and umbecoming of a member of this forum.
You should also note that the workmanship on these emblems are known to be excellent, they came in numbered sets, and there is a line of people who would buy them if he started making them again.

...and if you take the time to read carefully my theory was that he...

The post on the other forum is about a guy in England who had his upright emblem stolen and replaced it with a white star grill emblem from the dealership. That was to prove that it fits properly over the hole for the upright star on the W124 and would likely fit over the hole for the W210 which has the same part number*. To think that DFWdude to go all the way to England to steal grill emblems is just stupid.
No one (but you) mentioned DFWdude stealing anything.
As for accusing me of accusing DFWdude of being a thief, here's another link for you to check out: Welcome to Reading Is Fundamental
* The 1994-95 W124 hood emblem is the same as the W210.
