Getting too much boost, sometimes.

I'm running between 5.5 to 6.0 psi under full boost, but there are times when I'm passing another car under very light load at about 3k rpm's when I see 8 to 9psi. It is very strange but under full load I never go past 6psi even when I'm spraying Methanol. Anyone have any ideas why?
Mario

Could your belt be slipping under full throttle Mario?

boost creep??? but i thought that only happens in a turbo due to a failed waste gate...

belt slipping is not the issue, you wouldn't get any boost then.

Mario, does it spike to 8 or 9psi, or does it stay up at that level?

Does the HPS supercharger kit use a Eaton Roots style blower, or a twin screw style supercharger. With a roots blower, it is possible to have higher boost at mid range loads, because of the way air is compressed.

Let me know if you want me to go into detail.

The HPS Gen1 system uses the Eaton(magnuson) MP90 which I'm sure you know is a modified roots design.

Even if E55Cent is not interested I personally would be interested in hearing more detail about what causes the higher boost.

It is an Eaton roots but these blowers are not classified as copressors like a Vortec, or twinscrew, but rather an air pumps. I'm not sure if my car has always done this and I just noticed or it is someting new. I have modd'd the kit a lot to get the power and safetly I needed. As of now I'm pushing 400whp and 420wtq

Your catalytic converters may be failing causing severe backpressure which in turn will cause your boost readings to spike. Stock cats are probably having trouble coping with the SC for the long term. I bet the cats are starting to partially melt or corrod causing severe backpressure, you may want to make sure thats not the issue, PLUS its a fantastic excuse to get high flow cats . Here are some great possible upgrades, metal cat is the best @189, vibrant is super free flowing but they look ugly and are not the highest quality construction, and the $99 are metalic cats but i cannot tell if they are 200 or 300 cell cats, they look like 300 cell as to metalkat compared to the vibrant which is definitely 200 cell. hope that helps

I wonder, but my cats are prettiy new, they have about 40k on them. They blew at 78k and the dealer replaced them for free, which is great because they wanted $4500 each. ouch!!!

well 40k is low for cats then gain u are pushing rediculous amounts of air out of that engine. Realistically its probably not cats then if they are that new (however always a possibility when running boost). U think that perhaps maybe its the gauge or sensor itself thats bad and boost is running just fine? Do you have a wastegate on your SC setup or not (i know most done, but some do).

The gauge seems to be working fine, I even tested it in a friends truck. The Eaton supercharger has a by pass valve that lets air pass through the blower when the car is not under load. I guess I would be more worried if I was hitting 8-9psi when I have the gas pedal all the way down, but it's only at 1/3 throttle.
