Im currently looking at purchasing a 1999 E55. Is there an E55 AMG sport? The vehicle I'm looking at has chrome sport badges on the fenders and Im wondering if they belong there.
Heres my real question though. It has 173,000 miles on it. They were all highway miles as the owner of the vehicle (female owned) drove it 200 miles a day to work. The transmission shifts fine, the engine seems to run very strong, and all maintenance was done on the car religously.
Whats everyones opinion on that many miles? Does 13,9 seem like a good price for said vehicle? Its black on black, with aftermarket chrome 19" wheels, and aftermarket head unit.
Good price, but good chance for things to start going wrong! Lots of $$$ to repair and parts are $$$ to buy. If you like this car and can repair it yourself go for it otherwise look for a lower mileage car. Well thats my take
I don't think there's a Sport model for the E55. What upgrades do you need if your car is already tuned by AMG? Mine is a Euro-spec car and has the Avantgarde trim. Not sure if there's any other trim (like Elegance or Classic) made in the E55 AMG.
Well, I am an automotive technician by trade. My good friend is currently attending Mercedes Benz training classes, and then he will be working as a technician for a MB dealer, so that will make parts just a little bit cheaper.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has this kind of mileage on there E55. Any good information as to common problems with these vehicles. I have already read about the motor mounts and the front spring perches on this website. Anything else?
Their is an E430 sport. Make sure that this thing in an AMG. Pop the hood check the engine...look for 13.5 in rotors ect...Just make sure it's not a rebadged 430 with AMG emblems

Yeah. I was at the dealer on Friday and saw a dude picking up his a dope "S55 AMG" (according to his badges). The guy follows me in to the parts/service counter pays for the work done on his car.
Cashier: "What car are you paying for, sir?"
Guy: "White S430"
First, I would try and find a lower mile example. Reason being is pure economics. Once you get up around that 100K mark, the diference in price with added miles starts to be miniscule. For a few grand more you may be able to cut your miles in half. Depends on the market, but I am in a very strong price market for these cars, and there were cars at $15,000 with 110K miles on them for sale when I purchased several months ago.
As to your specific question, MAFS, rust (particularly under trim pieces), and window regulators are a few other prominent areas. Generally, these cars are tanks. This was one of the last great Mercedes before cheap suppliers ate heavily into quality. High miles on these engines is nothing if properly cared for (its the other parts you have to worry more about -- parts are very pricey).
The tricky part may be documenting how cared for it was (as the car depreciates and you move down the economic food chain the risk getting an owner that neglected the car increases).
Can you tell if its an E55 by the vin number? It has AMG wheels, AMG pedals, the shift lever says Affalterbach, the engine cover says AMG, and the car is fast as all hell.
The owner of the vehicle was a female, and all the miles are highway. She cared for it religiously as there are recipts for everything in the glovebox. I havent went thought them but with the number that are there it looks like its been solidly maintained.
Window motors and MAFS aren't to bad. I guess Im more worried about odds of a catastrophic engine failure and getting parts for it.
Im getting a call today, its at a dealership, and there checking to see what i owe on my other car still. After that maybe Ill see if theyll let me take it to a MB workship and have it checked out.
