I tried to search for ideas to see if I have a bad EIS, Steering column lock or something else. It just worked the other day when I came home. Turned off the car and took out the key. I never heard the column locking sound like I used to when I took the key out...but when I tried to put the key back in and see if it unlocks or locks...nothing, it just keeps saying TAKE KEY.
I tried switching key fob batteries, tried getting a jump with the same car battery...but do you guys/gals think I need to replace the car battery because I just had it replaced only a month ago. It has been getting cold out here in Maryland but I don't think that cold to lock it up. Just seeing what else I should check for before I call the tech/RA to see if I have to have it towed in. Any help will be appreciated because this is my daily driver.
WOW...talk about a horrible service. Called the roadside assistance and they sent a so called "technician" out to my house, that part was fine. When they guy showed up and I told him the problem all he did was check the battery connections and the key fob for the blinking light (the battery in the key was new also)....and that was it. Never even tried to replace the car battery or use the scan tool like they did before. Last time it said I needed a new battery...maybe that was a setup too!!!
Said I needed a new key fob. I was like...WHAT....is that it? He never once checked the steering lock to see if anything was wrong, lose, or anything. Kid looked young enough to still be in high school. Then to top it off he didn't even put the rear seat back to cover the battery. That part was my fault cause I didnt' check the back cause of the tint...but damn. That was the worst service I ever had with that MB dealership and will NEVER have someone come look at my car from that place again.

Call back Roadside Assistance and see if you can get the same kid to come back out. When he arrives, kick his as$ and take his tools. That's what I would do.
The battery in your keyfob is for the infrared functions and has nothing to do with starting your car. There is a chip in your keyfob that the coil in the ignition switch (EIS) energizes to read/write the rolling codes to/from the unit. If the code in the keyfob doesn't match the code stored in DAS/AAM, the steering column won't unlock and you won't be able to turn the key. It's a complex anti-theft system that makes it nearly impossible to steal your car, but the trade-off is there is no way to start your car if there is a problem with any of the separate modules (EIS/DAS/AAM/ECM). I just went through this nightmare with my '02 E55...see my recent post. Total cost was $2900 from the stealership. I hope yours is still under warranty - let us know what happens.

Well the so called "Tech" that came out didn't want to listen to a darn thing that I was telling him, that when I took the key out after getting home from work I never heard the steering column lock like I usually do. I told him I usually hear it when I put the key in and take it out...even if I don't start the car.
He just kept on blabing at the mouth about me needing a new keyfob cause the keyfob itself won't lock or unlock the door remotely, but the metal key will lock and unlock the doors. I told him that it won't lock or unlock by remote unless the steering column locks first, then I can finally get out and use the keyfob to lock the door by remote. But he wouldn't even check for anything else. Either way that's the first time...and last...bad experience that I ever have with them.
I never had any trouble with them before, but by watching this guy just go thru his so called "steps" for troubleshooting was just horrible and left a bad taste.
I think you need a new keyfob if it "won't lock or unlock by remote unless the steering column locks first, then I can finally get out and use the keyfob to lock the door by remote"
