Changing brake pads

Is this something the average mechanic can do? Or does it require a lap top to disengage the system as I've read some do.

RE: Changing brake pads

Does anyone know how many miles will the rear brake pad last? I have 40k miles on mine and I can see some occasional flash of brake lining light come on in the rain. I just have the front replaced not too long ago so it should not be the front (may be the sensor get shorted in the rain). I cannot tell if the rear is good or bad. The pad is a tiny square one so I imagine it might not last very long.

I also have a hard time getting the rear pad sensor from the web. Most places do not have it and they said it is not the same as the front sensor. Anyone has bought these pad sensors before? It is a cheap part which I can get from dealer but it is another trip to make.
