Reagrdless of ambient temperature, time of day, etc...I notice that my E55 will sometimes go like mad as soon as I mash the pedal, while other times, during the same drive, I mash the pedal again, and the same power is not immediately there. Instead the car seems to be "thinking" about how it should respond. After this 1-2 second lag, the car will shift hard and go strong. Not only is this frustrating for me, as I do not get the same thrill, but I'm concerned that I may be damaging the transmission simply by running the car hard. Has anyone had this same experience? Is there an explanation? Most importantly, what can I do to eliminate this lag? Thanks in advance for the responses.

Also don't forget the transmission is constantly adapting to your driving, trying to anticipate what you're going to do. If you're driving it kind of hard for any length of time, do you see a "lag" then? If you're driving it really easy, then suddenly put it to the floor, that could account for the delay. I notice if I'm on it around town, come to a stop, then take off slowly, the trans really delays shifting, thinking you're going to get on it again. If you're really concerned, take it to a dealer (or indie shop if you're out of warranty) that can plug it in and check for codes ASAP. The trans is big bucks, and it's better to catch a little problem now than it is to wait.
Try turning the traction control off. I have noticed with the traction control off, the car will launch from stop like a banshee every time. If the traction control is on, and there is any bit of debris on the road, the car will hesitate. My dealer checked the MAF because thats what I thought my problem was, and they said it was fine.
Somewhere between 23 and 55's information I think is the answer. Like 55 says I have noticed in the short time I have been driving mine that the computer does change things up as far as shifting goes. Also the traction control as 23 is mentioning will take the gas away from the driver when trying to control traction

This is good insight, but I still don't think you are having the same issue that I'm having. That suuuucks, because now I can't think of this as normal behavior. If you had this lag problem, you would know it. It happens with the ESP off and on. Also, my MAF has already failed, and been replaced. The behavior continues. The day I got it back from the shop it ran so nicely. The next day, the lag was back. Any other ideas? Thanks again for all the help.
I would definitely get it scanned for codes. It's possible to have a MAF going south and have no MIL. I just had that. When cold, it would hesitate slightly during an upshift, but seemed OK when warmed up.
I took my 01 E55 to the dealer and the mechanic came out to explain to me that due to the adaptive transmission, you have to set the tone of the drive early on to let the car know what you want to do. When I drive aggressively at the begining, I have no problem but when I started out crusing, the car would hesitate and reluctant to shift. The mechanic told me two choices: 1 shift manually (and it seems to work), 2 mesh the pedal to the floor to activate the shift button (it is way too much and out of control if you do that, especially when you are in a corner). I have been looking for people who can heck the transmission code to make the car more adaptive to the rate of throttle input but no one seems to bother with Mercedes codes. I don't want to turn off ESP either because it is not easy to hit the right button in a fast pace driving. Shifting works for me and it is immediate enough. The only bad thing is you have to keep hitting till you are in the right gear.
This seems to be the right answer. Thanks E55 guy!
Adaptive my arse! You seem to be onto something here. If I start out driving aggressivly, then the car does seem to perform better. The opposite holds true if I drive in a very relaxed fashion. Voila! The car hesitates. I wonder if AMG has improved upon this at all, or if they think a supercharger will simply make up for it. (W211's)To me adaptive should mean adapting to my mood light by light, not day by day. Thanks all.
