W210 E55 engine into another W210 bodyshell
Hi all
I am wondering if anyone has done a conversion such as dropping an E55 engine and transmission etc into a standard bodyshell such as the E320 etc.
My question is: are the bodyshells the same across the board?

Other than cosmetics, there were a few changes especially at the 99/00 years. To do that, you'd need the motor, trans, ECU, and the entire wiring harness. I wouldn't put that much power into anything without the E55 brakes as well.

That should work. I'd scavenge all the AMG parts I could, interior, cluster, etc. Good luck and post pics if you can.

You all forgot about the gas tank... Ever wonder why the trunk seems so small in an E55?

yes, thanks for that.
i dont know whether mercedes actually makes the body stronger for the E55 by putting in more spot-welds etc.

I thought aout a similar conversion (500 engine) for my E280, but decided against it because the M113 engine would have been too much work. The M109 is alot easier (and personally I think better) but I can't find one in "nearly new" condition.[:(!]

as for the gas tanks, the W210 could be ordered with a "touring" tank which had an increased capacity (an option on all the non V8 cars). I think the touring tank was the same as the V8 tanks, which included the E55.

Well, i did some research and it turns out that they are the same.
The E320 has the same fuel tank size as the E55 which are both 80 litres.
