Looking to buy a w210, what should I look out for?
Hello, Im looking to buy a W210, preferably 2000 or newer. Anything in particular that I should look out for? Your advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Having had a weird month or two I am thinking about rewarding myself with an upgrade from the C43 to an E55. It's my overall impression that the customisations wrought on the C class are a "bit too far" for the kind of ultra long haul driving I'm gonna be indulging in for a while, and the decision between the E55 and an E320CDi is my next stopipng off point.
Can anyone offer an opinion on the relative hardness of ride of the C43 and the E55? What wears out on the E Classes and what are the symptoms?

First, look for any non funtioning windows. The E-Class has a bad habit of the rear window regulators breaking. Even if you don't use the windows, they will still break because the cable used is under tension all of the time to hold the window up.
The next thing to go is the Control Arm Bushings. You can hear a popping or creaking while cornering on if you push down on the front end.
Other creaking sounds could come from the Door Checks. When you open the front doors it might sound like an old rocking chair. The bushings in the check strap that keep the door from swinging to far out or too fast go bad after a while.
Some E's have a dual cooling fan in front of the radiator for added air flow. One is turned directly by a motor and the other runs off a belt from that motor. Make sure the belt has not broken or jammed.
Other issues that were subjects of recalls were Balancing Dampers on the motor pullys and upper spring mounts rusting through.
Other than that, there could be dash cracks around the dash mounted airbag or in some of the wood trim pieces.
I would sugest havign the cabin air filters replaced that are in the dash behind the glove box. That will make the car smell fresher when the AC or heat is running.

Thanks, that's all good stuff. I wondered whether there were little but niggling problems and those filters definitely sound like nigggles - taking out the dash just for a filter...
is the balancing damper issue similar to the pulley breakup problem on the V6es?
