I think its the same block, but the W211 has just got strengthened parts due to the S/c, while the W210 had all sorts of high tech bits on it as well.
The reason I say this is that if benz kept the old E55 engine and then just slapped on a S/c the unit cost per car would be marginally higher between the W210 & W211 E55. Here they cost(ed) the same.
Well, the sc is pretty cheap, the E55 gained a few thousand bucks, so its probably the same just with an sc. The old one was strong enough I believe, but im not sure.
