Has any one had this message? I have a 97 E420. I have had this appear several times. I went to Schucks and borrowed an Actron Scantool but it didn't pull up any codes.

If the check electrics and check engine light illuminate, a code IS there. Scan somewhere else. Can be anything. Most common thing I see is air flow meter. Before its changed, remove it from the car and clean it with a non clorinated brake cleaner. Very common to get build up of dirt.

Take your car to Autozone and they will read the codes for free. Most common cause is the mass flow sensor. It's very easy to replace. Don't waste your time trying to guess what it is, get the codes. I speak from experience, this happened to me on my '98 W210.
