E420 + E430 differences

I accidentally posted this on the E50/E55 AMG forum.

Anyway, what is the difference between these two engines would you say? How about performance characteristics? Would you say the E430 is faster, or about the same as the E420?

I drove a '98 E320 and a '97 E320 back-tot-back once before. Both cars were very much the same in power, except the inline-six seemed a little louder at speed.

Re: E420 + E430 differences

E430 has a little bit more torque on the low band,
and burns little less fuel. Apart from that, they
even sound the same. I drive E50 and had numerous
chances to compare it against E55 which differs to
E50 in same way as E420 to E430 (M119 vs. M113 engine). The latter has two spark plugs per
cyllinder and bit improved electronics, intake
subsystem and..thats about it.
Difference in performance is really slight, and
as for my E50 to E55 - not noticeable at all.

But as with all newer models, with 430 you have
increased chances of getting better equiped car
ie. ESP is rare option for E420, i think that
all 430s come with ESP as standard.

If you're talking about the W210 body E420, from a performance standpoint, you won't notice the difference at all. If you plan on modding your engine at all (chipping, s/c, etc...), there are a ton of options for the modular 4.3L in the E430 but not that many for the 4.2L in the E420. The E430 also comes with the FSS system (which may be good or bad depending on your perspective) while the E420 does not. Since they are completely different engines, there are also some different maintenance concerns with each but both have proven to be solid, dependable motors.

I love my E420 and I also get great gas mileage. Engine mods I agree, there are more things out there for the E430 but as for interior, suspension and body, they are all the same. My E420 (thankfully) came fully loaded with the ESP option, Xenon headlights, heated and the 4 button air lumbar seats, Bose system and headlight washers (which I have never used btw). The only thing it did now come with, which was strange, was a sunroof. I was told it was special ordered that way for the extra head room and I agree that it has a lot of head room and also makes the car lighter, not having all of the sunroof parts. Anyway, I am thinking about an E55 soon. I'll have to see how much I can get for my E420 first once my Carlsson front bumper arrives from Germany.

In the book "Merceds-Benz Illustrated Buyer's Guide" by Frank Barrett the 0-60 time for the 1992-1995 400E/E420 is shown as 7.1 seconds versus 6.4 for the 1998 E430. Fuel consumption for the older models is listed as 18-24 mpg versus 19 city, 26 highway for the newer model.

Kind of interesting. You mean, according to Mercedes, the V6 is just as fast as the 420 engine with 275 bhp in '92 - '95?

Not V6 vs V8

The 92-95 400E/E420 is still a V8 engine, however, the comparison to a 96-97 E420 or a 98+ E430 is still not quite an apples to apples comparison. The 92-95 is the W124 body while the 96-2002 E420/E430 is the W210 body (different curb weight, transmission, etc...)

Yeah, I know about the W124. But isn't the W124 a little lighter? I know the curb weight of the E420 W210 is something like 3780 lbs. The 400E weighs 3600 something lbs.

Not to knock the V6, they're very solid cars, but how can the V6 be as fast as the V8 E420 1997 missing by just 3 tenths of a second.
0-60 is 7.0 seconds for '98 E320 (221 bhp)

0-60 is 6.7 seconds for '97 E420 (275 bhp)

Were the '98 E320's lightweights?

First of all, the E320 with a V6 is considerably lighter than an E420 (W210). This is because the E320 has an alloy block. Also, the E430 is probably lighter than the E420 (W210).

I remember when the W210 came out, I was shocked that the performance of the E320 was so good. But if you look at the differences, you will notice the closer-ratio 5-speed automatic and a much shorter rear-end ratio which both help acceleration off the line.
