i'm going to look at a '98 E320 station wagon tomorrow morning. it has 60k miles on it and as far as i know, it's in good shape. the car would be for my mom, though, and i want to make sure she gets a good car. i know 1998 was the first model year for the redesigned wagons -- is this an OK year to get? what should i look out for, if anything?

A Mercedes pre Purchase Inspection Would be a Great start. For the Service history request a MBNET The Trans have Leaks, shifting problems With 60k I Would Service the trans ...NO SUCH Thing as Lifetime fluid! The Crank Pullies fail,The A/c Systems Have problems,Exhaust leaks and cat conv rattle,Rear shocks leak,Dash board will crack after time at the Vents and Pass side air bag,Front seat frames will make noise,Front lower control arm bushings wear.
Dont want to Scare you..The Wagon Is a Great Car! I Own One.

thanks for the advice! the car was in okay shape, but clearly not well-loved or taken care of during its first 5 years of life: minor dents/dings in a few places, missing side-view mirror adjustment knob, dog hair all over the place, intermittent rattle from the engine compartment -- nothing major, but i was surprised the dealer didn't try sprucing it up a little more for the sale. so we decided to pass and keep looking. but i'll keep your comments in mind [:D]
