tooday i drive a '83 500 SEC. the wife and child are really anoyed about the room and and of course it's a costly thing as an everyday automobile. so i'm going for an aditional family car. the W210 T looks and feels like an excelent car, but:
What to look for when buying a '97 W210 T
I was wondering about the faults and drawbacks, and ofcourse great things about the car. Please take the time to help a fellow MB owner out.

Used W210
Check out all of the electronic feature such as the power windows, seats, steering column, sunroof and other switches. So far I had 1 of my rear window regulators go bad so that the window got stuck halfway. I had to replace the cable assembly. My child safety switch in the front console has a lose connection that kept the rear switches from working unless you hold it over. The climate controls buttons had to be held in before they would activate. I found one from a 1999 W210 and swapped the controler. Some of the wood trim may be cracking with age but you will be able to see that. Check with the dealer to see if there were any recalls for that year. Have them run the VIN number to see if there were taken care of. Make sure the power seats move in all directions. Check to make sure the AC blows cold and the aux fan comes on in front of the radiator when the AC is turned on. The only things that I had to replace on mine was the brakes, battery, tires, spark plugs, coils and most recently the waterpump. The one window and waterpump were the only suprises that I had. The rest was regular maintenance.

I'd look for a '98 or '99 E300 turbodiesel. These are powerful, durable, quiet, lower maintenance costs, and get great mileage, making them a good family car. We couldn't get it in the states, but I believe over there E300 wagons were available as well.

If the car is past 60K miles, make sure that it's had the ATF and filter changed (not in the regular service schedule). Also, check the rear diff for leakage. Ask about the A/C...did they run it on a regular basis, or was it off most winters/most of the time. Be careful, or you might be in for a rear diff $$$, A/C compressor $$$$, or a tranny job $$$$$$$ once the car gets past 110K miles.
