I purchased a 97 E420 recently. I am planning to repace the battery and I have been told that The car must been taken to a MB Dealer to reset the computer after battery replacement. Is this correct? This sounds ridiculous!
I recently replaced the battery on my '97 E420 and did not have to do anything except enter the radio code. The radio code instructions are in the owner's manual. It was very easy. BTW, there appear to be two possible batteries listed for the '97 E class so be sure you pick up the correct one.

I replaced my battery and all I had to do was put in the radio code. The ECU will relearn anything that gets erased in the first 50 miles of driving.
