Smart Key

I just purchased a 1998 E430 with only one electronic smart key. I want to get a spare and maybe the 'start only' unit as well. Are they available only thru Mercedes dealers? Anyone know the cost? Can they be obtained from other sources, and if so where and what is the procedure for getting them reprogrammed? Thanks.

Re: Smart Key

I'm curious about this as well. Although I haven't thought to ask the dealer, I heard somewhere that a new smartkey would be at least several hundred $.<br> I checked some web sites that soecialize in replacement keys, and none carried them for MB. I suppose the key is so smart, only the factory can set them.

Re: Smart Key

Only from Mercedes unless you want to take a chance with one from E Bay that most likely will not work. Dealer must program. FYI: Car came with 2 normal keys and one start only. You should have gotten the set

Re: Smart Key

I just had the same situation with a CLK.. My dealer got me a set of new keys(all 3) for no charge. The situation I was in, with 2 keys floating about somewhere in town, forced them to reprogram the Ignition. 5 days and 2 sets of keys later, I have a CLK that only my keys will start. But as I understand, if you do not want to reprogram the ignition, you can just get new keys and program them to your car(although then the extra keys floating about that you did not get when you bought the car will start your car also)

Re: Smart Key

I think you have to reporgram your ignition anyhow since the car only allow a maximum of 3 keys... so the only way to have 4 keys that work is to have the additional key having the same exact code as the one you are using. but I dont think it is possible to have 2 identical keys since the code in the key change everytime you lock/unlock the car... or am I wrong?

Re: Smart Key

I paid $150 for my spare and my E-Class is a 1997, so it must be more expensive or the same.
