I am interested in the E300 TurboDiesels. I drive a lot and would like to know what is the best mileage I can expect. Also, is the reliability good? It seems like this car was a perfect blend of good (not awsome) performance with excellent mileage.
As far as performance and mileage is concerned, you should better get one of the modern CDI (common rail direct injection) engines (E270, E320 or E220), but due to fuel quality problems, you don┤t get those in the US.
But the E300 Turbodiesel still is quite good in performance and mileage as well.
I own a 99 E300 with 25K miles. The car has been trouble free thus far. I average 33 mpg in highway driving (75 mph with AC on) and about 30 in town. I love the car and you really have a hard time telling its a diesel. I also own an 83 300D and there is no comparison. No smell, no smoke, and no clatter. The 96 and 97 models are somewhat underpowered so if you are looking for performance and economy, I'd look for a 98 or 99.

Never any trouble, but it does drink a fair amount of oil. Very quiet. Feels almost as fast as the older I6 E320's. Great car, pick one up if you can find it.
This is my 5th diesel, 3 VW and 2 MB. I currently
own a 1995 E300 and have 112,000 on it. It is an
incredibly reliable auto. I have kept track of
mileage since the day I bought it, new, in May of 1995. I consistently get 29-33 mpg. I drive mostly highway and go fast, 75-80 usually.
This car is a 6 cyc which is a great improvement over my previous 1980 E300D which had 5 cyclinders.
The 1995 doesn't burn oil, doesn't smell, doesn't make noise and has a nice response off the line.
Naturally, it's not real fast from a start, but neither is it slow. This is a car for someone
who wants luxury, style and economy. I still get
a good feeling when I get behind the wheel.
I will be selling it though, since I need a 4 wheel drive and the only negative thing about the diesel is it's stability in snow...it stinks.

Although mine is not the turbo-diesel, I get about 38 mpg (at 80mph) and the vehicle, though by no means a dragster, will do 130 mph. My E300D has proven quite reliable (with the exception of the driving lights). I have had no mechanical problems, after 67000 miles. I like the diesel engine and would recommend it to anyone who is interested in owning the most fuel efficient midsize 4-door automobile available.
