97 E420, low fuel light flashed followed by check engine light. Sent to shop but found no faults (just replaced gas cap and canister several months ago). Any idea what might have caused this problem? Thanks for advice and answers.

Possibly, you have a leak in your evap control system. Ask then to do a smoke test to find out where the leak is.

Also make sure your charging circuit works properly. Sometimes a bad regulator causes a low battery voltage condition which can affect the operation of the sensors / solenoids of the fuel / evap system.

Welcome to the forum, and welcome to my world as I have the same problem, yet it can get expensive if you throw parts at the problem, but known as the gas-cap-code where faulty gas-cap, or lost cap will trigger the code. Here is my saga on the M119 engine(same as yours):

It is a pain in the butt code if live in a state where you need to do emissions testing as one has to drive and idle the car to pass the readiness markers. We were just taking about this..
