Been a few months since I posted. Would appreciate some direction to save money here so I can do some repairs myself. Scanner shows codes P0410, P0105, P0715. Shop ran a free scan, will cost $100 to find out exactly what things need to be repaired. These are codes I have not seen before. Internet search shows:
P0410 could be any of: Defective Air Pump Check Valve(s)
Faulty Air Pump or Air Pump Relay
Faulty air control solenoids or vacuum lines
System may be restricted or plugged with carbon
Common Misdiagnoses
Air Pump Check Valves function, but are slightly restricted
Air Pump is replaced when the relay is the problem
Parts are replaced when the the system is restricted or plugged with carbon
P0105 could be:
MAP sensor vacuum hose disconnected or plugged
Bad MAP sensor, Bad TPS
Damaged or problematic MAP sensor connector
Damaged or problematic TPS connector
Damaged wiring
Short to reference voltage on signal circuit of MAP sensor
Loss of ground to MAP sensor or TPS
Open on signal circuit of MAP sensor
Bad PCM
P0715 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction, could be
Defective Input/Turbine Speed Sensor
Defective Shift Solenoids
Defective Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor
Defective Valve Body
Dirty transmission fluid that restricts the hydraulic passages
Common Misdiagnoses
Engine Misfire problem
Internal Transmission problem
Driveline problem
Does the car run OK ? In limp mode ?
Have you tried clearing the codes and see if they come back ?
Have you done any repair work prior to error codes ?
Did they all come up at the same time ?
Do you have a scanner ?
Does the car run OK ? YES RUNS GREAT
In limp mode ? NO BUT FROM TIME TO TIME WHEN STOPPED THE GEAR GETS STUCK IN 1ST AND CLUNKS LIGHTLY BEFORE IT HAPPENS. IF I SHIFT TO N AND D AGAIN IT RESOLVES ITSELF
Have you tried clearing the codes and see if they come back ? YES
Have you done any repair work prior to error codes ? NO
Did they all come up at the same time ? NOT SURE, MECHANIC DID SCAN
Do you have a scanner ? NO
Start with the low hanging fruit. The P0105 which is a hard code for the MAP.
Locate your MAP sensor in front of the engine.
Remove the connector.
Remove the MAP sensor
Check the short vacuum hose for leakage, split. If there is some vacuum leak it may cause other problems too.
Typically the MAP sensors do not go bad (with some exceptions). So the problem is either the electrical connection (or wiring all the way to the ECM) or the vacuum hose. If both are OK and you still have P0105 then the sensor is the suspect, and you can test the voltage at the connector at ignition on (engine off more than 3.5 V) and at idle (less than 2V).
I would look at the other two after this fixed, because if you have a massive vacuum leak, it may interfere with the operation of the air pump testing (P0410).
Well... to be helpful the code of "next concern" is your 705.. see the stickies to (1) replace tranny adapter plug with $14 genuine MB/MOPAR plug only, and (2) buy a buy a $9 can of MAF and give your TCM (tranny control module) a thorough cleaning.
Your 410 and 105 are minor.
Consider proper tranny service - since THAT is your most sensitve spot for potential costly repair..
Finally had my car repaired (146K miles). Both power steering lines were leaking fluid onto the rack & pinion.
New lines and case connectors installed, P/S fluid filled.
Bad transmission comp (TCM) and leaky gasket replaced. New trans fluid & filter installed.
The odd thing is that when they returned my car, the Check Engine light was off. The mechanic said they did not get codes P0410, P0105, P0715 that I had seen. They got only trans error codes. To be sure I will scan it again.
Do you think the new P/S and trans parts caused the error codes to be resolved?
The answer is, no. P0105 and P0410 have nothing to do with the transmission or power steering. It is likely that they cleared the codes in the TCM, and then in the ECU after that (for P715). This will also clear the other codes as above in the ECU.
Just drive few more driving cycles and see if the codes will come up. Maybe when they removed and replaced the TCM, they had moved the wiring to/from the ECM module which may have solved the problem (maybe temporarily).
Most codes (non-critical) come up on the display after two consecutive (drive cycles) detection of the same error conditions. If you have a scanner that shows the pending error codes, you should be able to see them, if there are any. Some intermittent errors take a long time to raise CELs, because the conditions that generate the error may not occur.
For example, the air injection system is checked only in conditions when the system is in closed loop (the O2 sensor outputs are used for air/fuel mixture management). So if the car is driven short distances with no time to warm-up when the destination is reached, the P0410 code will not come up, as the air injection system test will simply not be performed.
Out of curiosity, how much did it cost you to replace the TCM, and the whole transmission repair job (if you do not mind posting) ?
Been driving it fixed since March 23 up to 15 miles at a time (20-25 per day) at speeds up to 50mph.
Trans gasket, filter, (TCM $245), shift linkage bushing, case connector,
2 P/S lines + fluid. Valve kit, rack & pinion seal - all parts $699. Labor $695. Hourly rate $99. They were cheaper than 2 other places I got estimates from and had good Google reviews. car runs great, peace of mind.
Well what do you know. Today the check engine light came back on. So not only do you know how to repair cars, but you can predict what will happen to them within 36 hours. Back to the scanner.
Thank you both If the only codes are P0410, and P0105, the good news is they do not normally affect the engine performance. The MAP is used for EGR testing, and unless you have a problem with the EGR (which would be additional codes, and performance issues), and P0410 is the emissions related issue. If the air injection pump does not come on when it should (90 seconds with cold engine start up), you will have emission increase till the O2 sensors come alive and monitored.
Hopefully the P0715 will not come back after the TCM change and transmission service. Get the codes and let us know.
