I searched this forum and found answers buried deep in the middle of other threads but they contradicted each other. I am replacing my instrument cluster in my 1997 E420. I have read that the mileage is stored in three different areas.
When I change the cluster, will the mileage on the cluster change to what is in the computers?
I'm pretty sure it's written in hexadecimal on an eprom chip in the cluster, so technically it can be overwritten by someone more skilled I that area than you or I.
You can also overwrite the existing donor with a breadboard, some jumper wires, an ic chip socket, soldering iron, solder, solder wick or sucker (all easily obtainable at radio shack... cheap too) an old laptop with a serial port and internet access, and the proper software available free online. Do a search on YouTube
You mean there are some where it's legal? Where, middle of nowhere?
Honestly, it's just easier to just swap the eeprom instead of mucking around with eeprom programmers and whatsnot. Not everyone is computer literate, as this requires a reasonable knowledge in computer know how usage.
